Based in Hampton Roads, Virginia, Forgotten Heroes Foundation (FHF) is on a mission to inspire the next generation of STEM trailblazers through the exciting world of aviation. Founded in 2018

, FHF was born from a simple yet powerful idea: use the narratives of pioneering heroes in STEM and aviation to help others discover the hero within themselves. Since then, our team of aviation experts, business leaders, and technology innovators has been working to create a world in which zip code does not determine STEM fluency.

✈️ Last weekend, our hangar was buzzing with more than just engines—it was fueled by the curiosity and energy of the next generation!

We were honored to host a group of incredible students for our Discovery Flights, and as you can see in the video below, from mastering the basics of aerodynamics to experiencing the thrill of the cockpit, these students didn't just learn about STEM—they lived it.

At Forgotten Heroes Foundation, we believe that these immersive experiences do more than just explain the mechanics of flight; they teach critical problem-solving, build lasting confidence, and ignite a lifelong passion for exploration and innovation.

Many thanks to Creative Excellence Agency for capturing the enthusiasm and energy of our participants!

Blue skies, big smiles, and a huge leap forward for the next generation of aviators! ✈️☁️

We had an absolutely incredible weekend hosting students from Lynnhaven Middle School and Norview Middle School for a day of hands-on exploration and inspiration.

The highlight of the event? Our Discovery Flights! Every student and volunteer had the opportunity to take to the skies for a one-on-one flying experience alongside our professional pilots, who generously volunteered their time and expertise to make these dreams a reality.

🌟 A Special Thank You
This event wouldn't have been possible without the amazing energy and mentorship provided by our volunteers from Old Dominion University. A massive shoutout to:

• ODU’s Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
• ODU’s Engineering Ambassadors

Thank you for showing these students that the sky isn't the limit—it’s just the beginning! Your dedication to STEM education and community leadership is truly inspiring.

Helping young heroes find their wings is what we do best.

✈️ We’ve been logging some serious miles lately! Our mission to honor the past and inspire the future has taken us from the hangar to the high-altitude, and we couldn’t be more excited to share what we’ve been up to.

Here are three highlights from our recent adventures:

⭐️ STEM Night at Deep Creek Middle School: We were honored to participate in Deep Creek’s first-ever STEM Night! From explaining the physics of flight to showing off some of our gear, we loved seeing the spark of curiosity in the next generation of engineers and pilots.

⭐️ Hosting Jack and Jill of America:
The hangar was buzzing with energy when we hosted a fantastic group of students from Jack and Jill. It was an incredible day of hands-on learning, history, and a little bit of "cockpit dreaming." There’s nothing like seeing a student’s face light up when they realize the sky is not the limit!

⭐️ Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day:
We took to the skies and flew up to Delaware State University for a powerful event hosted by Black Women in Aviation. Celebrating the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and meeting future aviation mechanics, pilots, and engineers was an experience we won’t soon forget.

Why do we do it? Because every flight and every event is a chance to prove that history lives through action. Thank you for supporting the Forgotten Heroes Foundation as we keep these stories alive and soaring!

Today, we pause to honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Gladys West, a STEM pioneer and mathematician who passed away on January 17, 2026, at the age of 95.

While many of us use GPS daily to find a destination or track a flight, few know the name of the woman who made it possible. Working at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, Dr. West spent decades developing the complex mathematical models of the Earth’s shape that became the foundation of Global Positioning System technology.

Dr. West’s journey is a testament to the power of education and resilience. She was the second African American woman ever hired at the Naval Proving Ground in 1956, and after a 42-year career with the Navy, she continued her pursuit of knowledge, earning her PhD at the age of 70.

At the Forgotten Heroes Foundation, our mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators by connecting them with the legacies of pioneers like Dr. West, whose contributions to STEM forever changed navigation.

Happy New Year! 🎉

As we step into 2026, Forgotten Heroes Foundation is taking a moment to look back on an incredible 2025.

Last year was defined by powerful collaborations and unforgettable events that brought science, technology, engineering, and math to life for the next generation. From hands-on workshops to community-driven partnerships, we are so proud of the impact we’ve made together.

As we launch into the new year, our mission remains the same: to provide immersive STEM experiences that inspire and empower the youth in our community. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store! 🎉

Had you told me, prior to working for Forgotten Heroes Foundation, that one day I’d *willingly* put on and learn how to use a parachute, I would have laughed out loud. Fast forward to a few weekends ago when our Executive Director, Micah Lenox, asked if I wanted to fly & go “barnstorming.”

As I would soon learn (after the fact), aviation barnstorming was an early 20th-century form of entertainment where pilots, often surplus World War I aviators, performed aerial stunts and gave rides to the public, primarily in rural areas. They would fly into towns, use a farmer's field as a temporary runway, and put on shows of daring maneuvers like loop-the-loops, barrel rolls, and wing-walking to attract crowds. This practice was especially popular in the 1920s before aviation safety regulations were introduced in 1927.

We geared up, took off in the “Jesse,” a WWII model T6 Texan trainer, and barnstormed at 220 knots (253 mph)somewhere over Suffolk. It was by far one of the most fun and exciting adventures I’ve ever had!

So glad to have captured video from my perspective and have video from a spectator on the ground as well (2nd video is in the comments).👇🏼

What a fantastic week it's been! The Forgotten Heroes Foundation had the immense privilege of hosting two enthusiastic groups of students from Norview High School.

We loved diving deep into the world of STEM career options, exploring the exciting capabilities of drones, and celebrating the legacy of STEM pioneer Walt Braithwaite. The students weren't just looking—they were hands-on! They learned about the various aircraft housed in our hangar, and the absolute highlight was getting the opportunity to sit in the cockpits to learn how these incredible machines operate.

It's truly inspiring to see the curiosity and potential in these young minds. We hope this is just the beginning of many future collaborations with Norview High School to help spark the next generation of engineers, pilots, and innovators!
