is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing premier environmental education through learning programs, storybooks, and activities. Our team develops unique outreach programs focusing on wildlife and habitats in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and encourage daily environmental stewardship. Each hour long multimedia program features bay creature sign language, movement, story, song, part of our story coming to

life, ways you can help the environment, meeting our wildlife friends, and more. Our clients range from schools, parks, and museums to festival style events and commercial entertainment. When our traveling shows were put on hold due to the pandemic, we began construction on the Studio at Mermaid Grove. Our virtual programs are now a multi-camera experience with live captioning accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing. We have engaged up to 30k individuals a year and require booking months in advance. Don't wait to summon the Chesapeake Mermaid to your next event. 🐢 Did you know that a turtle shell can naturally flake off? ⁉️ It’s a fascinating process which allows them to grow and adapt. It can sometimes happen as a response to changes in the environment, disease, malnourishment, or shell trauma. These flakes help them shed old, damaged layers and reveal a fresh, strong shell underneath, ensuring their protection and survival in the wild. Nature never ceases to amaze 🌿🐢

🌿 Who loves container gardens? 🌱 While we’re big advocates of native plants, we also recognize the natural benefits that some non-native plants can bring. Check out these specially designed crates and pots we created to naturally fend off those pesky mosquito bites! 🦟 We’ve used Citrosum, Lemmongrass, and Marigolds, but you can also try Lavender, Peppermint, and Garlic. 🌼

Now, you might have come across online info suggesting that these plants don’t work, but let’s dig deeper. Often, those claims are based on very specific circumstances… maybe only one plant was tested, or there weren’t enough planted for sufficient coverage. That’s why we propose a multi-faceted approach! 🌺

Here’s what you can do: plant a variety of plants, move the containers around, and combine them with other options like avoiding peak biting hours (dawn/dusk), eliminating standing water, and protecting yourself with body spray. 🏞️

So, who’s up for some container garden wisdom? Share your tips below! 👇💚”

Thank you to everyone who joined us at NatureFest yesterday! We haven’t even settled back into Mermaid Grove yet because it’s already been a busy day for wildlife rescue. Today’s calls included a nestling Red-shouldered Hawk, a nestling Red-tailed Hawk, a Barred Owl struck by a vehicle all transported to Owl Moon Raptor Center. Also eight baby opossums from two separate rescue calls brought to Second Chance Wildlife Center. Every young animal must be carefully assessed, and whenever possible, we evaluate the surroundings to determine if reunification with a parent or nest is the best option. That important work takes time, and rescue calls can quickly pile up. Please support your local wildlife rehabilitation centers and take a moment to learn what to do before reporting an orphaned animal. It can make all the difference for wildlife in need. Also a big thanks to Mary Hollinger who helped transfer animals to us and continued in the other direction to pick up 3 baby kestrels which fell out of their nest. Have you ever helped reunite a wild baby animal with its parent? 🦉🦅🦝💚

✨ Debuting at NatureFest 2026! ✨ These one of a kind Wildwood Wands are hand carved, hand painted, and hand assembled using premium materials including waxed thread, leather, gold accents, beads, and carefully chosen natural treasures, some gathered from the gardens of Mermaid Grove. 🌿 Each wand features natural and repurposed elements, a beaded hanging loop, and a positive message printed on plantable seed paper. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced a proposed expansion of hunting and sport fishing access across national wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries in 32 states. If approved, the proposal would add or expand more than 1,450 hunting and fishing opportunities across 111 stations, making about 95% of National Wildlife Refuge System lands available for these activities. Supporters say the move increases public access to outdoor recreation and supports local economies, while some conservation groups have raised concerns about wildlife management and visitor safety. The proposal includes new hunting and fishing access at several refuges and hatcheries for the first time, along with updates to regulations and expanded access for certain species and locations. The Fish and Wildlife Service says public comments will be accepted for 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. What do you think is the best use of our protected lands? 🦆🎣🌿
