After the Battle of Resaca in May 1864, Union soldiers were reinterred elsewhere, but the Confederate dead remained where they fell. When the family of John Green returned home after the war, they found their farm covered in shallow graves.

Determined to honor those soldiers, his daughter Mary Jane Green gathered local women on July 4, 1866, forming the Ladies Association for the Burial of Confederate Soldiers Who Fell at Resaca. Mary Jane became president, and the group raised $2,000 for the project.

John Green donated land beside a small stream, and workers reinterred over 400 soldiers in what became known as the Resaca Confederate Cemetery. When they fell $500 short of the cost of fencing the grounds, the Georgia Legislature stepped in to help. Their dedication led to the creation of what is now the Resaca Confederate Cemetery, the first Confederate cemetery established in the South.

On this day 162 years ago... Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Yankee historians will tell you that this was the Confederate High Tide. They would have you believe that Yankee victory was now inevitable and that there was no way that the Army of Northern Virginia could beat the Army of the Potomac. That is a lie. No one, North or South, knew how the rest of the war would play out. The Army of Northern Virginia was still a major force to be reckoned with. Ask yourself this. If the Army of Northern Virginia was in such a precarious situation or that Gen. Lee was worried about his ability to fend off a Yankee advance, why did he send 1/3 of his army to Georgia to help Bragg? How was Gen. Lee able to mount the Bristoe campaign at the same time Bragg was winning at Chickamauga? Don't fall for the Yankee trap. Yes, Pickett's Charge failed. But, Gen. Lee didn't quit the field for over 24 hours. The Yankees did nothing to hurry him along. They were no where near able to take on the Army of Northern Virginia. So, remember. The outcome of the war in July 1863 was not inevitable and our ancestors did not give up or quit. Don't let Yankees tell OUR story.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Two men are wanted after they were seen removing 3 bronze plaques that pay tribute to Chattanooga's Civil War history at the northern end of Missionary Ridge.

The theft happened at about midnight on Sunday at the Sherman Reservation, at 2419 North Crest Road, according to a post on the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park page.

That post says the 2 men were driving a late-90s/early 00s model Ford F-150, extended cab, green in color with a two-tone gray stripe on the bottom quarter of the vehicle. The driver's side front wheel does not match the other wheels.

The two men are described as being white in their mid 20's with brown hair. At the time, one male was wearing a bright orange shirt similar to a construction safety shirt.

If you know anything about this incident, please contact National Park Service Ranger Justin Young at 423-298-7437.

The NPS says anyone who helps bring this pair to justice may be eligible for a reward.
