The Inaugural Charlottesville Jazz Festival: A Dream Realized
In June 2026, the Charlottesville Jazz Society proudly presented the first-ever Charlottesville Jazz Festival. This milestone exceeded our expectations and marked the beginning of what we believe will become a lasting tradition in our community.
Over four days, the Downtown Mall came alive with the sound of jazz. Nationally acclaimed artists, outstanding regional musicians, and many of Charlottesville's finest performers shared stages across multiple venues, creating an atmosphere of discovery, celebration, and community. The festival featured free performances, club concerts, educational programming, and unforgettable headline events, all designed to make jazz accessible to everyone.
In total, seven venues, 18 acts, and more than 150 musicians, as well as several bonus players in artful pop ups, delivered – and received the benefit of – performances, enriching Downtown Charlottesville with the living conversation between musicians that is known as jazz.
One of the festival's greatest successes was its ability to bring people together. Longtime jazz enthusiasts, first-time listeners, families, students, and visitors from across the region experienced the incredible diversity and spirit of this uniquely American art form. From the Young Lions educational performances to packed evening concerts and lively club performances throughout the Downtown Mall, the energy was inspiring from beginning to end.
The response from the community was overwhelming. Attendance was strong, volunteers gave generously of their time, local businesses embraced the festival, and the excitement surrounding the event confirmed what many of us have believed for years: Charlottesville is a city that is ready to embrace a world-class jazz festival.
Financially, the festival exceeded expectations, finishing with a positive operating surplus that will be reinvested directly into next year's event. More importantly, we established a solid foundation on which to build an even stronger festival in the years ahead.
The Charlottesville Jazz Society extends its heartfelt thanks to our musicians, volunteers, sponsors, partners, venues, donors, and the thousands of audience members who made this inaugural festival possible. Your enthusiasm, generosity, and belief in our mission transformed an ambitious vision into a remarkable reality.
This was only the beginning.
We're already looking ahead to JazzFest 2027 with new ideas, exciting artists, and an even greater commitment to celebrating jazz, supporting education, and enriching our community through music.
Thank you for helping us make history.
