Rough day today.

This morning I found Zero down in her pasture.

I got her to sit up sternally, because ruminants cant ruminate when they are lying flat, and called Dr Linc.

He was out in just over an hour and examined her.

The diagnosis is Polio, which is not the same as Polio in people. Polio in goats (polioencephalomalacia) is caused by a deficiency in thiamine, or B-1, which is usually made in abundance in their rumen.

We arent sure why Zero developed it as she's been happy and healthy here for several months now and her diet has been the same the entire time.

Anyway, she is on Thiamine injections every 3 hours. She also got antiinflammatories and, just to be sure, CD antitoxin.

She is propped up between hay bales, to keep her sternal, in deep straw.

Polio causes (hopefully temporary) blindness, uncoordination and tremors, amongst other things, but she is better able to control her head after 3 doses of thiamine, and she ate and drank when I offered it this evening.

So send you love, prayers, vibes or whatever you prefer, her way.

She's got a battle ahead, but I feel guardedly optimistic.

Look at our Luna girl!!! She's so shiny 🌟

Another farrier visit for her this week. This time Blair made a cast of her frog. She essentially has no frog so we're trying to encourage growth. The cast will apply pressure to increase blood flow and therefore growth.

Dr. Shane also came to see her
She got all her vaccines amd a wellness exam. He agreed that she's about 25, but outside of her knee and body condition, she seems to be a healthy girl and while she can still gain a little more weight, he's pretty happy with her progress as he doesn't want her carrying more weight than necessary on that bad knee.

We'll continue frequent hoof trims to work on getting her square.

She has claimed the corner stall as her own, so she comes and goes as she pleases amd is enjoying the fan during the day, and grazing the sweet grass around the barn in the evening.

She likes to hang out with volunteers and visitors. He face has softened a lot, and the anxiety is leaving her eyes.

I think she knows she is safe and she's found her home.

Let me introduce you to Sally and Zero.

They came to us from a family near the coast who asked us to give them a home.

They are.....large.
Too large. They like their food. But we're working on that.

Today they had their feet trimmed, which went actually really well.

Both ladies stood nicely for miss Blair to trimm them up, and they are both walking more evenly and comfortablely now.

They are sweet, older ladies who are learning to fit into a bigger herd.

They definitely have opinions, but they are settling and even making some friends.

Sometimes, when we're gifted 200lbs of strawberries, we can get a little over-excited and roll in them while we eat them. I thought it a little counterintuitive but everyone seemed to have fun, so what do I know?
