A little rain never stops team HOWS! 🌧 On Saturday Oct 3, Andrea Denton, Marya Dunlap, Ban Lim, Will McAnany, and Mark Mehlin braved the weather to put up a pen for sweet Luna, taking her OFF THE CHAIN! 🐾 ⛓️💥 🐾
We met Luna’s family this summer when they reached out to HOWS about better shelter for her and her canine brother Bruno. 🐶 🐶Both dogs spend time inside (yay!) but when they are outside, need a safe space to stay (and a secure space where they can’t bother the resident chickens 🐓 🙂 ).
After HOWS delivered wooden dog houses for the dogs and provided spay surgery for Luna ⚕, it was time for a pen! 🎉
This was an AWESOME team: experienced HOWS volunteers Mark, Will, and Andrea joined first-timers Marya and Ban and constructed the new 15 x 20 pen in just a few hours! 🕑 The rain was not as bad as we thought, and we conquered the rocky ground to connect our dig-proof underpinning. ⚒
Can we talk a bit about our two assistants? 😍 Bruno was close by all day, and this boy LOVES his Kong. We threw it for him approximately 89 times during our visit. 🤣 🤣 He is adorable! And we almost had a stowaway orange tabby: that smart kitty sought out the warm car to get out of the rain! 😼
We finished up and Luna was introduced to her new pen, enjoying the pine shavings on the ground and her dry house (along with one for Bruno, too!) 👍
HOWS fence days are always special: the work is fulfilling, but here’s a little secret: driving together to the site is always fun too! 🚗 We have great conversations, with today’s topics including:
- all the places on our wish lists for travel (from Norway to Malaysia 🧭 ) (and strategies for lower cost flights ✈),
- the names and ages of our pets 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐶 🐢, and
- the deliciousness of a locally-baked, toasted sourdough English muffin 🇬🇧 (which, coincidentally are baked near our site today!!)
We also exchanged names for getting together for future hikes in the Shenandoah! 🌄
