So far this year, 18 children have died in hot cars. Most parents and caregivers believe it could never happen to them, but in most cases, the child is left behind unknowingly. Summer ending and kids heading back-to-school can bring changes to family routines, which can increase the risk. If someone else is doing drop-off or your schedule shifts, it's important to have reminders in place. Make a plan with your daycare so they’ll call you if your child hasn’t arrived within a few minutes. That simple step could save a life.

Here are a few quick reminders to share with kids as they head back to school and spend more time walking around the community:

1. Use crosswalks and sidewalks!

2. Look right, left, and right again before crossing the street.

3. Make eye contact with any drivers at the crosswalk before crossing the street.

4. If listening to music, remove headphones or lower the volume before crossing the street.

5. Use a cellphone only in a safe area, away from traffic.

With the school year beginning, it’s a great time to reinforce safe walking habits.

🚸 Teach children to look left, right, and left again and to keep watching as they cross.

📵 Encourage “heads up, phones down” to avoid distractions.

🚶‍♀️‍➡️ Always use sidewalks and crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street.

🚗 Remind kids to stay alert for turning or backing vehicles and to never run into the road or cross between parked cars.

👧 Children under 10 should always cross with an adult.

🔦 When it’s dark, help them stay visible with bright or reflective clothing.

Let’s all stay alert, model safe habits, and work together to keep every child safe on their walk to and from school. Did you know? Males account for more than 6 in 10 fatal pedestrian injuries among children.

🚍 SCHOOL TRAFFIC IS BACK — PATIENCE, AWARENESS & SAFETY! 🚍

As students here in Denver and across Lincoln County head back to school this week, the Denver Fire Department reminds everyone to slow down, stay alert, and be patient.

With school back in session, expect increased traffic and congestion around our schools, especially during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. Students, parents, and school buses will be returning to the roads, and it may take a little extra time for everyone to settle back into their routines.

🚌 Watch closely for school buses and ALWAYS stop when required.
⚠️ Slow down in school zones and around bus stops.
👀 Stay alert for children walking or crossing the roadway.
⏰ Expect delays and leave a little earlier than usual.
❤️ Be patient and courteous with other drivers.

Start early, take your time, put the distractions away, and help make the start of the school year a safe one for all.

As a new school year approaches, it’s important for families to get back into routines, including how students travel to and from school safely. After months away, everyone can benefit from a quick safety refresher.

Annually, there are on average, 815 student deaths and 152,250 injuries related to school travel during normal school travel hours. This back-to-school season, we’ll be focusing on safety tips for all modes of transportation whether your child walks, bikes, rides the bus, or travels by car. Let’s make this a safe and successful school year together!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 6:00 PM and come celebrate National Night Out with your neighbors, local law enforcement, and community partners!
