The Freedom Center for Social Justice An intersectional, intergenerational approach to liberation.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom. It is a reminder that freedom has always required courage, community, and collective action.

In this message, Bishop Tonyia Rawls reflects on the meaning of Juneteenth and why the work of justice remains as important today as it was generations ago. As we honor those who came before us, we are also called to consider what freedom demands of us now.

Faith has shaped some of the most important justice movements in American history. Yet when LGBTQ+ history is discussed, faith is often left out of the conversation entirely, or remembered only as a source of exclusion and harm.

That story is real. But it is not the whole story.

This week, we're exploring the faith leaders, artists, organizers, and communities who refused to choose between their spirituality and their humanity. These stories remind us that faith has also been a force for liberation.

Because faith has never belonged exclusively to those who use it to exclude.

And join us this Thursday for a screening of Mama Bears, a powerful documentary about faith, family, and LGBTQ+ advocacy, followed by a community conversation on how love, spirituality, and community can create more affirming and just spaces for all.

The South has always produced icons. ✨

Too often, LGBTQ+ history is told through the stories of coastal cities. But some of the movement's most influential leaders, organizers, advocates, and trailblazers came from right here in the South.

From legal pioneers and grassroots organizers to community builders and cultural icons, these individuals challenged expectations, changed institutions, and helped create a more just world for generations that followed.

Their stories remind us that the South has never been a bystander to history. It has always been a place where people imagined something better and worked to make it real.

➑️ Swipe through to meet a few of the Southern LGBTQ+ icons whose impact can still be felt today.

And if you'd like to meet some local icons carrying that legacy forward, join us this Saturday for the Human Library.

🌾 The South has always been radical. Too often, LGBTQ+ history is told through the lens of a handful of coastal cities. But the South has its own legacy of organizing, community building, cultural innovation, and resistance.

From civil rights leaders and legal pioneers to grassroots organizers, community newspapers, bars, churches, and mutual aid networks, Southern LGBTQ+ people have been shaping movements and creating community for generations.

This week, as part of 250 Years of Resistance, we're exploring Southern Soul: the people, places, and traditions that helped define LGBTQ+ life across the South and continue to influence our communities today.

Because the South isn't a footnote to the story. It's one of the reasons the story exists at all.

➑️ Swipe through to learn more, then join us this Saturday for the Human Library, where you'll have the opportunity to meet community elders and hear Southern LGBTQ+ history directly from the people who lived it.

πŸŽ‚ Today is Bishop Tonyia Rawls' birthday. πŸ’œ

For 17 years, Bishop has dedicated her life to building community, advocating for justice, and creating spaces where people could find belonging, healing, and hope.

In this video, she shares a simple but important reminder: supporting a movement takes more than words. It takes action.

As we celebrate her birthday and continue honoring her legacy throughout her final month at the Freedom Center for Social Justice, we invite you to do more than cheer from the sidelines. Stay engaged. Show up. Volunteer. Attend events. Advocate. Donate. Help build the future our communities deserve.

The work continues because people like you choose to be part of it.

If Bishop's leadership or the Freedom Center's work has impacted your life, there's no better birthday gift than investing in the mission she helped build.

πŸ—£οΈ What if remembering is the revolution?

As part of our 250 Years of Resistance, Rev. Alba Onofrio of reflects on memory, identity, and the stories we inherit during our revolutionary roots week.

Too often, we’re taught to see parts of ourselves, our families, our cultures, and our histories as something to leave behind. But what happens when we reclaim those stories? What happens when we tell them with pride instead of shame?

Resistance isn’t only found in protests and movements. Sometimes it’s found in remembering who we are, where we come from, and refusing to let those stories be erased.
