RABIES ALERT — YORK COUNTY
Another rabid animal has been confirmed in York County, and this case involved exposure to both people and pets.
A bat found near Lometa Drive and Waterside Trail in York tested positive for rabies.
According to South Carolina public health officials:
3 people were exposed and referred to healthcare providers.
2 dogs and 2 cats were exposed and are being quarantined as required.
This is the 7th animal to test positive for rabies in York County in 2026.
Bats deserve a little extra caution because their teeth are extremely small and a bite or scratch may not always be obvious.
If you find a bat in a room with a sleeping person, unattended child or someone who may not be able to reliably say whether they were bitten, DON'T simply release the bat. Contact public health or animal control for guidance so it can potentially be tested.
Also make sure your dogs, cats and ferrets are current on their rabies vaccinations. Vaccination can make a major difference in what happens to a pet after exposure.
Never handle a bat or other potentially rabid wild animal with your bare hands.
If you or your pet may have had contact with a bat, raccoon, fox, skunk or other potentially rabid animal, contact the appropriate medical/veterinary and public-health authorities promptly.
Please share this one — especially with York County pet owners.
