The mission of the Salisbury Human Relations Commission (HRC) is to create an environment of hospitality, inclusiveness, acceptance, and appreciation of the diversity of all people. The HRC was created to encourage understanding and goodwill among all citizens regardless of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religion, creed, age, disability, s*x, s*xual orientation, gender identity or expres

sion, pregnancy, martial or familial status, National Guard or veteran status, or any other status protected by federal, state, or local law while promoting peace, understanding, respect, goodwill, and harmony among all citizens. The HRC is appointed by the Salisbury City Council and consists of twelve (12) members. Members help coordinate events that are aligned with the HRC’s mission including the Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration, the Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Humanitarian Award Ceremony, and more. The HRC meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Building located at 217 S. Main Street, Salisbury, NC in the City Council Chambers.

The Elizabeth Duncan Koontz (EDK) Committee, a subcommittee of the Human Relations Commission, is currently accepting nominations for the 2026 Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Humanitarian Awards.
This award recognizes people and/or groups from the Salisbury-Rowan community who have made important contributions to improving human relations in the areas of education, employment, housing, industry, business, civic, church, advocacy and community service. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, April 24, 2026.

This award is named in memory of Elizabeth “Libby” Duncan Koontz who was one of the organizers who re-established the Human Relations Council in 1985. The Human Relations Council, now referred to as the Human Relations Commission (HRC), mission is to create an environment of hospitality, inclusiveness, acceptance and appreciation of the diversity of all people. City of Salisbury staff were at the Salisbury City Hall today, Jan. 16, packing backpacks for students ahead of Saturday’s Community Resource Fair.

The parade is Saturday, January 17, and begins at 11 a.m. The parade route follows MLK Jr. Ave from the Jaycee Sports Complex (1113 S. MLK Jr. Ave) to the Salisbury Civic Center (315 S. MLK Jr Ave). The resource fair runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include local agencies, health screenings and free school supplies.

The breakfast on Monday, January 19, is sold out.
