National Blood Donor Month (NBDM) is an annual observance in January that honors blood donors, raises awareness about the ongoing need for blood, and encourages new donors to start the year by giving blood.

Why this is important:
• Cold weather and holiday disruptions make winter a tough time for blood drives, creating urgent shortages
• Hosoitals require blood daily for emergencies chronic illnesses, childbirth, and cancer patients.
• Only a small percentage of eligible Americans donate, despite the high demand
• African Americans make up 13% of the population but donate less than 3%. Many sickle cell patients need blood from someone with a close blood type match, usually someone with a similar race or ethnicity
• 1 Unit can help up to 3 people

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the NAUW Queen City Charlotte Branch honored Dr. King’s legacy packing lunches at My Sister’s House and donating cessential items to Opportunity House. It was a powerful reminder that service through love is made visible.

We continued our mission of empowerment by hosting an Educational Literacy Virtual Seminar with Brightway Insurance (The Walker Agency). Participants gained practical tools for smart car buying, understanding insurance coverage, and protecting themselves from costly insurance gaps.
