Shad Alberty Memorial Scholarship
Our theme this year - “Connecting and Continuing”
Your Assignment - Talk with a Member of the Beach S**ggers National Hall of Fame (BSNHOF). Bring forward a s**g story they wish to share, commemorate, and live forever. This can be a serious story, a comical story, or anywhere in-between. You, as the author, are welcome to write any length story and be creative with sharing their story. The winner will be announced at Jr. SOS. (The winning story may be read at Jr SOS, depends on how much time is allowed.)

Rules:
1. Identify the Member in BSNHOF with whom you want to speak and interview. BUT do not contact them yet.
2. Call or text Donna Hosaflook at 704-906-4980, identify yourself and let her know the Member you wish to contact. The purpose is to prevent duplication and give the Member an indication of what to expect.
3. Donna will contact the member of the BSNHOF and let them know your desire to speak with them and document a s**g story. When the member grants permission, Donna will reconnect with you with approval to proceed and with their contact info and best times to contact.
4. You have the option to write more than one page. The most important point is to create a s**g related story from your Member that will live forever.
5. Story is due to Donna Hosaflook via email: [email protected], on or before June 30, 2025.
6. To be eligible to win a scholarship, you must either be a rising freshman heading to college or a current student in college – both must be associated with the junior s**g community.

SHAD ALBERTY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION! This is for active s**g community college bound high school seniors and current college students. ESSAY DEADLINE will be JUNE 30, 2024. Download and fill out the form, return with your essay.

Here is the essay question:
“Who was Shad Alberty and why do we honor his contributions to our dance, Carolina S**g? What made Shad unique and how do you familiarize yourself with the pioneers of Carolina S**g?”

(Hint: Seek out Beach S**gger’s National Hall of Famers and discuss with them. Also, there are a lot of Shad and Brenda students out there, too, you can ask.)

Please make sure your essay is on one letter size paper (ONE PAGE), 12 point, Times New Roman font, and double-spaced lines.

When complete, but no later than June 30, 2024, email to Donna Rushing Hosaflook at [email protected]. Scholarships will be awarded at JUNIOR SOS. Good luck.

On behalf of S**GTIME YOUTH FOUNDATION, we congratulate Gracie Pandure and Mack West as winners of the 2023 SHAD ALBERTY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. We are awarding each with a $2,500 scholarship. Our thought-provoking essay question this year: “TELL US ABOUT A S**G SITUATION IN WHICH YOUR LEADERSHIP MADE THE DIFFERENCE, WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED?” Both of these recipients “nailed it” in their essays.

As an aside, I was responding to a donation this morning that included an attached note stating, regarding Shad Alberty, “We are here today because he was there to teach us yesterday.” How true!

Thank you to all that support S**gtime Youth Foundation – s**g clubs, businesses, and individuals. Your donations further the education of our junior s**ggers. We wish to thank our Board of Directors at S**gtime Youth Foundation, our Scholarship Committee, and our benevolent donors.

Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Scholarship Committee: Brenda Alberty, Carol Church, Ned Gregory, Grayson Smith, Mitzi Shirley, Terri Wilson, and Sam West (non-voting member). These volunteers are always available to assist when needed. We appreciate their contributions.

Download and fill out the form, return with your essay. Here is the essay question: "TELL US ABOUT A S**G SITUATION IN WHICH YOUR LEADERSHIP MADE THE DIFFERENCE, WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED?" S**gtime Youth Foundation received four scholarship applications for 2022. We are pleased to award all four applicants with nice scholarships!

Scholarship essays were presented to the Shad Alberty Scholarship Committee anonymously (names removed from the essays). The Committee made their selections and here are the awards:

1. Elizabeth Batten - $2,500
2. Maxwell Rusmisell - $2,000
3. Lauren Cookman - $1,500
4. Trinity Davis - $1,000

Congratulations to our participants! The Shad Alberty Memorial Scholarship has paid out more than $35,000 over 20+ years to junior s**ggers who are high school seniors heading to college and members of the s**g community attending colleges. Many thanks for your support over the years!
