We are honored to be a part of the virtual Pacific Northwest Anti-Hazing Summit on July 15th. HPN Executive Director Todd Shelton will present "Lead better. Bond better. No hazing needed." This interactive session dives into how hazing affects student organizations and its members—and how you can be part of the solution. We are also excited to see former HPN Board Member Lianne Tong Kowiak will be presenting the keynote.

The Hazing Prevention Network is proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Award.

Named in honor of pioneering journalist and anti-hazing advocate Hank Nuwer, this annual award recognizes individuals whose leadership, courage, and commitment are helping create safer communities and advance the movement to prevent hazing.

Congratulations to our 2026 recipients:

• Alisa Hayes, MD, MSAM – with Medical College of Wisconsin for advancing research that equips healthcare professionals to recognize hazing-related injuries and improve prevention efforts.

• Gina Merritt-Epps, Esq. – for strengthening anti-hazing education, policies, and reporting while expanding innovative prevention initiatives within Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

• Sheila Rea – for years of leadership in building a campus culture rooted in accountability, collaboration, and belonging at Florida Gulf Coast University.

• Dr. Stevan Veldkamp – with Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform for advancing research-informed hazing prevention and helping colleges and universities build safer communities through evidence-based policy and practice.

As we prepare for National Hazing Prevention Week (September 21–25 :: nhpw.org), we celebrate these four leaders whose work reminds us that preventing hazing requires courage, collaboration, and a commitment to changing culture.

This week, we had the privilege of partnering with UCLA to host a successful Hosted Hazing Prevention Institute™ bringing together professionals from across the campus committed to creating safer, healthier, and more inclusive student experiences.

Over two days, participants explored the research behind hazing, examined the individual, organizational, and community factors that contribute to hazing cultures, and developed practical strategies to drive meaningful change on their campuses.

What makes the Hosted Hazing Prevention Institute™ so impactful is the opportunity for colleagues across departments to come together, build a shared understanding of hazing prevention, and leave with actionable plans to strengthen their prevention efforts.
