Tips for kudzu blossom harvest:

- sometimes blossoms are nestled under leafs, so a good way to tell if blossoms are near is look on the ground for dropped petals, and then you know they are nearby

- Harvest away from busy roads and sprayed areas

- Harvest with good human friends

- Harvest in communion with nonhuman friends

- Take the time to shake the blossoms and lay them on screens while you continue harvesting so all the little bugs can stay close to their homes (this is especially important for kudzu beetles because if they are moved around another legume crop, like soy, they can potentially eat that)

- ask the tiny spiders to hop on your hand and move them back to a safe home

Harvesting 20 # fresh blossom for .. thanks to MM and CC for their help with this harvest.

Bonus: Harvesting kudzu blossoms also prevents seedpod development, thus reducing spread.

Thankful for the bounty and moments of peace in the ‘zu.

Happy harvesting!

Reeled in a big catch today with Jena! 🎣
Kudzu roots growing along treelines tend to be larger because when vines grow upward on the trees they do not root advantageously into the air as they would growing laterally on soil, instead energy is channeled into to a big root below the tree or pole.
In some cultivation traditions in Asia vines are purposefully trained upward to concentrate root development in mounds. Wild harvesters and root diggers (horiko-san) know how to find these large roots by following old growth vines and root crowns.

Whewee, it’s been challenging to stay optimistic and motivated amidst witnessing ecological collapse due to Anthropocentrism and the further unmasking of the technofascist state in the US… Alas, here we are! And we are still little animals in our habitats. These days it feels as though simple actions such as growing our own food, removing invasive species to foster growth of resilient native species, wild foraging for food, material and medicine, and tending to our immediate surroundings (including human and non-human species) can be radical acts.

We can also be the balm! Join Kudzu Culture and friends this weekend March 8th and 9th for two days of Community Through Kudzu:

Saturday March 8 ~ 2pm to 5pm ~ Marshall, NC at Fiberhouse Collective
Learn how to reverently dig kudzu roots and review the steps to make kudzu root starch ~ email [email protected] or text LB at 828-280-7874 to RSVP and for address / parking instructions

Greetings, ‘zu keepers! We’ve been harvesting, making, tending and planning next steps for Kudzu Culture. This summer we celebrated another successful Vine to Cloth Camp in Marshall, North Carolina, where we joined Fiberhouse Collective to weave kuzu-fu (kudzu cloth).

We are inspired by new connections like our burgeoning series with . We recently visited the Appalachian Herb Hub in Duffield, Virginia, where there is opportunity for scaling-up our root harvest and processing this winter. Stay tuned for more updates and root preorders (fresh and dried available throughout the wintertime).

Visit www.kudzuculture.net to signup for our email list to receive periodic updates.
