This year, the ISSVD is broadening the conversation.

Rather than focusing on one condition, Vulvar Awareness Day 2026–2027 will address the full spectrum of vulvar health across every stage of life — from dermatologic conditions and pain disorders to infections, hormonal changes, pediatric health, s*xual health, precancer and cancer.

Our campaign message is simple:

Vulvar Health Matters.
Know. Recognize. Act.

KNOW. Better education helps clinicians and patients understand vulvar anatomy, symptoms, and disease.

RECOGNIZE. Persistent or recurrent symptoms deserve appropriate evaluation — not assumption.

ACT. Examine. Ask questions. Seek evaluation. Biopsy when indicated. Refer when needed. Advocate for better vulvar care.

Throughout 2026–2027, ISSVD will share evidence-based education, clinical resources, assessment tools, and conversations designed to improve awareness and support earlier, more informed care.

This is one campaign with many conversations — and we invite healthcare professionals, patients, institutions, educators, and communities around the world to take part.

Help us expand the conversation.

Updated terminology is more than language. It shapes diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment planning, and long-term surveillance.

In this YouTube podcast video, Dr. Anna Clare and Associate Professor Tania Day discuss the 2026 ISSVD terminology update for vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) and squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL).

The update emphasizes classification by etiology, helping clinicians distinguish between:

HPV-associated disease, now referred to as HPVA, where diagnosis is supported by block-positive p16 immunohistochemistry.

HPV-independent disease, now referred to as HPVI, with further classification by **p53 status**, an important factor in understanding prognosis and risk of progression.

The conversation also clarifies the distinction between neoplasia and lesions, supporting more accurate communication between clinicians and pathologists.

This is an important discussion for anyone involved in vulvar disease diagnosis, pathology, treatment, or follow-up care.

Premenarchal vulvar lichen sclerosus is an important pediatric vulvar condition that can be underrecognized, particularly when symptoms are subtle or attributed to more common childhood concerns.

In this video, Dr. Alla Vash-Margita, a specialist in pediatric and adolescent gynecology and co-author of the SWIFT model paper, invites the ISSVD community to the forum “Vulvar Lichen Sclerosus in Children: Consensus and Controversy” at the ISSVD World Congress in Halifax.

The session will explore the **SWIFT diagnostic model**, a clinical framework designed to support recognition of premenarchal vulvar lichen sclerosus.

SWIFT stands for:

Soreness
Whitening
Incontinence
Fissures
Thickening of the cl****al hood

As presented by Dr. Vash-Margita, this model has been reported to predict premenarchal vulvar lichen sclerosus with 97% accuracy.

Join us in Halifax for a focused discussion on pediatric vulvar care, diagnostic accuracy, early recognition, and the areas of consensus and controversy that shape clinical practice.

See you in Halifax.

This Pride Month, we recognize that everyone deserves access to respectful, evidence-based healthcare.

Trans men and non-binary individuals may still require vulvar, vaginal, cervical, and s*xual healthcare depending on their anatomy and personal health needs. Yet many report barriers to care, delayed diagnoses, or discomfort seeking medical attention.

Understanding how testosterone may affect vulvovaginal health, staying up to date with recommended screenings, and having access to knowledgeable healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference.

Healthcare works best when every patient feels seen, respected, and supported.

This June, ISSVD celebrates diversity and reaffirms its commitment to advancing education and care for all people affected by vulvovaginal conditions.

Pain during s*x is common. Silence around it should not be.

Dyspareunia affects a significant proportion of people across all life stages—yet it remains underrecognized, underdiagnosed, and often misunderstood.

Many individuals delay seeking care due to stigma or the belief that pain is “normal.” Even when they do, they may face misdiagnosis or dismissal.

Sexual pain is not just physical. It impacts mental health, relationships, and quality of life.

Effective care requires a multidisciplinary approach—integrating medical, psychological, and pelvic health expertise.

At ISSVD, we support the global initiative to establish May 7 as Sexual Pain Awareness Day (SPAD).

The goal is clear: increase awareness, reduce stigma, and improve access to evidence-based care.

How to take part:
- Share this message with your community
- Educate patients and colleagues
- Lead or participate in local awareness initiatives
- Join the global conversation

You can also participate in the 12-hour live virtual marathon hosted by Hadassah University Medical Center, featuring multidisciplinary experts and global perspectives.

Awareness is the first step toward better care.
