Celebrating Volunteerism, Education & a Legacy of Giving
Our Foundation and Atrium Health Cabarrus are deeply grateful to Bill and Ann Cannon for their ongoing support and their commitment to investing in the next generation of healthcare leaders.
Last month, we had the honor of gathering with the Cannons to recognize Lorena Ramirez Zarate, recipient of the 2026 Ann Cannon Spirit of Volunteerism Scholarship Award. Lorena is part of the first cohort of students from the Cabarrus Health Sciences Institute to complete her high school career in the Biomedical Sciences pathway and is now continuing her education at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences. She is also the 24th recipient of this meaningful scholarship. Lorena began volunteering at Atrium Health Cabarrus in 2024 and contributed more than 70 hours of service to our hospital. Her passion for healthcare doesn’t stop there—after nursing school, she hopes to continue her education and become a Community Family Physician, bringing compassionate care to the community.
We were also honored to welcome Rachel Houston, Dean of Allied Health at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, who shared insight into the new high school program and Lorena’s journey as the first cohort to complete the program and continue into the College.
Created in 2004, the Ann Cannon Spirit of Volunteerism Scholarship is funded by the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation as a tribute from Bill Cannon to his wife, Ann, honoring her years of volunteer service, leadership as a founding Foundation board member and former chair, and dedication to Atrium Health Cabarrus.
Since its inception, this scholarship has supported 24 outstanding students with more than $50,000 in scholarships.
We are incredibly grateful to Bill and Ann Cannon for turning a legacy of volunteerism into opportunities for future healthcare professionals. Their generosity continues to make an impact—one student, one volunteer and one future healthcare leader at a time.
