There are reports that Border Patrol agents are active in Charlotte and surrounding cities. Please stay calm, stay informed, and protect yourself by knowing your rights.
πͺͺ Carry Your Identification
β’ Everyone: Carry a valid ID such as a driverβs license or Real ID when going out.
β’ Green Card Holders: You are legally required to carry your original green card at all times.
β’ U.S. Citizens: You are NOT required by law to carry proof of citizenship (passport, naturalization certificate, etc.).
βοΈ Know Your Rights
No matter your status β U.S. citizen, green card holder, visa holder, or undocumented β you still have strong rights under the Constitution.
Your Basic Rights
β’ You have the right to remain silent.
You do not need to answer questions about your immigration status, where you were born, or how you entered the country.
β’ You have the right to refuse a search.
You do NOT have to consent to a search of your body, car, phone, bags, or home.
β’ You have the right to ask: βAm I free to go?β
If you are not being detained or arrested, you may leave calmly.
β’ You do NOT have to open your door to Border Patrol or ICE unless they show a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
(Most ICE warrants are administrative and do not allow forced entry.)
β’ You have the right to record officers as long as you donβt interfere.
β’ You have the right to speak to a lawyer before answering any questions.
