There are reports that Border Patrol agents are active in Charlotte and surrounding cities. Please stay calm, stay informed, and protect yourself by knowing your rights.
🪪 Carry Your Identification
• Everyone: Carry a valid ID such as a driver’s license or Real ID when going out.
• Green Card Holders: You are legally required to carry your original green card at all times.
• U.S. Citizens: You are NOT required by law to carry proof of citizenship (passport, naturalization certificate, etc.).
⚖️ Know Your Rights
No matter your status — U.S. citizen, green card holder, visa holder, or undocumented — you still have strong rights under the Constitution.
Your Basic Rights
• You have the right to remain silent.
You do not need to answer questions about your immigration status, where you were born, or how you entered the country.
• You have the right to refuse a search.
You do NOT have to consent to a search of your body, car, phone, bags, or home.
• You have the right to ask: “Am I free to go?”
If you are not being detained or arrested, you may leave calmly.
• You do NOT have to open your door to Border Patrol or ICE unless they show a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
(Most ICE warrants are administrative and do not allow forced entry.)
• You have the right to record officers as long as you don’t interfere.
• You have the right to speak to a lawyer before answering any questions.
