The Charlotte Flute Association was created in 1964 by founding members Irene Maddox and Joe Little. With its purpose of promoting interest in and study of the flute, the CFA sponsored various events including master classes, recitals, and workshops. Among the flutists who appeared in Charlotte under the auspices of the Charlotte Flute Association were Fred Wilkins, Maxence Larrieu, András Adorjan
, Alain Marion, Carol Wincenc, Geoffrey Collins, Julius Baker, Ransom Wilson, Mark Thomas, and Jean-Pierre Rampal. After the death of the organization’s leader Irene Maddox in 1995, the CFA entered a period of dormancy. However, the Charlotte Flute Choir, a performing group, has remained active throughout the years. The choir rehearses weekly and performs at various events throughout Charlotte. The Charlotte Flute Choir is a separate entity with a different 501(c)(3) non-profit number than the Charlotte Flute Association. The Charlotte Flute Association was resurrected in 2019 with our first event, an All-District Clinic on December 1, 2019. Membership is open to professional and amateur flute players, teachers, students, performers, flute makers, and flute enthusiasts. Benefits of membership include free events for members, including the annual All-District Clinic for students and the members' recital.
