🥕 Feed & Flourish NC Update

A Community Rapid Response for Safe, Caring, and Globally Competitive Communities

The nation continues to face uncertainty surrounding federal SNAP funding, creating a nutritional roller coaster for millions of families. One week it’s funded, the next it’s reduced, and sometimes it’s not funded at all. Meanwhile, benefits have already been cut — leaving deep gaps for families who depend on this vital support to feed their children, elders, and loved ones.

Even as discussions continue in Washington, the shutdown has not yet ended. If a government reopening agreement passes the House of Representatives and is signed by the President, it would fully restore SNAP benefits through January 30, 2026. Until then, the need remains both very real and very urgent.

Food is a daily basic need — not a luxury — and across North Carolina, local food banks and church pantries are feeling the strain. With more than 1.4 million residents statewide and over 212,000 in Mecklenburg County relying on SNAP, the ripple effects are already being felt in every community.

That’s why Feed & Flourish NC will continue our Food Gift Card Drive until it’s no longer needed. Every card helps families bridge the gap during this period of uncertainty. Any remaining cards, as originally planned, will be donated directly to area food banks and community partners to ensure they reach those most in need.

Let us continue to pray that a resolution comes soon — yet act now to minimize the impact for our neighbors across North Carolina.

Feed & Flourish NC Food Gift-Card Drive is a collaborative inter-community rapid response addressing the widespread food insecurity caused by the recent government shutdown, SNAP disruptions and benefit reductions—impacting 42 million Americans nationwide, including 1.4 million in North Carolina. In Mecklenburg County alone, 212,000 residents are affected, with 81,000 in Cumberland County, and rural areas such as Sampson, Robeson, and Cleveland Counties facing critical shortages among seniors. Wake, Rowan, and Cumberland counties are also seeing sharp increases in need, driven by furloughed federal workers and families facing financial hardship.

Local food banks are reporting unprecedented demand, with one Mecklenburg County partner noting a 1,000% surge in food assistance requests this month. The campaign reminds the public that SNAP supports not just the unemployed, but also families in crisis, foster children, seniors, and working households hit by temporary hardship.
