Yesterday we went to Fallston, Cleveland County, NC to the Fallston Veteran’s Memorial which honors local service members that were in multiple American conflicts. It was dedicated on May 21, 2005 by American Legion W.R.Gary post 527.

This Lincoln County Confederate Memorial, erected in 1911, was sponsored by the Wallace Reinhardt Chapter and children of the Confederacy. It is located on the grounds of the Lincoln County Courthouse. It was built as a memorial drinking fountain honoring Confederate Soldiers of Lincoln County. It was not a functional water source used by Confederate Soldiers during the war.

Confederate soldier James Edward Hanger enlisted for the war June 1, 1861. In less than two days, he became the first soldier to lose a limb. He was hit in his leg by a cannonball. Back at home he created his own prosthetic leg and opened the company Hanger, Inc which was sold in 2022 to Patient Square Capital, LP, and remains open for business.

LAWRENCE, JOSEPH JOSHUA
Previously served as Captain of Capt. Joseph J. Lawrence's Company of Artillery, N.C. Volunteers," which later became Company F, 40th Regiment N.C. Troops (3rd Regiment N.C. Artillery). Appointed captain of this company, probably on May 14, 1862, Signed a receipt for ordinance stores on June 5, 1862, and a requisition dated July 22, 1862. Transferred to Company H, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry, on or about September 10, 1862.

Listerine, the well-known antiseptic mouthwash, was developed in 1879 by Joseph Lawrence, a chemist and doctor based in St. Louis, Missouri, who sought to create a surgical antiseptic inspired by the pioneering work of Joseph Lister, the English surgeon who introduced antiseptic techniques in surgery.
Lawrence formulated Listerine using a combination of eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate, and thymol, creating an alcohol-based antiseptic solution. He named the product Listerine in honor of Lister, recognizing his contributions to reducing post-surgical infections
Initially, Listerine was marketed as a surgical antiseptic and general germicide, and it was later licensed to Jordan Wheat Lambert, a local pharmacist, who began promoting it to dentists in 1895.
Over time, Listerine expanded beyond surgical use, eventually becoming a popular mouthwash for oral hygiene and a solution for bad breath, achieving widespread consumer recognition in the 1920s.
Joseph Lawrence’s invention was significant not only for its antiseptic properties but also for its role in popularizing oral hygiene products, making Listerine a household name and a lasting legacy in both medicine and consumer health.

I went to Steele Creek Presbyterian church cemetery yesterday in search of Robert and Eleanor Carothers Wilson, Revolutionary patriots. Eleanor was known for her sharp tongue in the face of the enemy. Recognized as a patriot of the American Revolution for supplying rations in NC. She was born in 1724 in Chester Co., PA and died 4/27/1802 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC. She and Robert had seven sons that fought in the war, serving in NC & SC militias. Son Zacheus signed the Declaration.
Robert was too old to fight. He was taken prisoner for ferrying supplies to Patriotic troops. He was born 12/12/1717 in Cumberland County, PA and died 12/14/1894 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC. 🫡🫡

While preserving history, I went back to Steele Creek Presbyterian and located John Craig Dixon Jr. He was a MLB pitcher. He was first signed as a free agent by the Washington Senators in 1941. He then served in the US Navy during WWII. When discharged he went back to the minor leagues and then into major league with Washington on 4/20/1953. He also played for the Philadelphia Athletics. He concluded his career in 1956 as a contributor to the NY Yankees squad which won the World Series that year. After his MLB career he continued to play in a semi pro league and later managed a convenience store in the Steele Creek area for 35 years. He was inducted into the American Legion Hall of Fame in 1989. He was also the “Old Timer” of the year in Ringgold, Ga at the Catoosa County Special Olympics.

Steele Creek Presbyterian church and cemetery were established in 1760. This was the first burial, an unknown stranger passing through on his horse that threw him against a tree nearby, killing him. The stone was erected in 1967 by the cemetery committee.
If you have been there in the past, you will no longer recognize the area. The airport and city/county bought the church and tore it down but had to leave the historic chapel.

Another unique tombstone at Elmwood. John King owned “Chief” the elephant along with “Mary” and “The Boy.” I’ve read John was very mean to Chief. On September 27, 1880, John was drunk and as the elephants were being unloaded, Chief turned and smashed John against the boxcar, crushing him. John died shortly thereafter. Chief’s new owner took him to Cincinnati where he almost killed another man. In December 1890 it was decided he should be killed due to his vicious spells. On a wooden platform he was shot 13 times. After being shot 11 times, Chief moved his ear forward as if saying shoot here. He was shot there and let out his death screech. Once dead, another shot him above the eye. In one article it states he had a health problem unknown to owners that caused the attacks (see last pic). His skeleton was sent to the University of Cincinnati and remained until 1998 and is now on display at the Cincinnati Museum Center. In one article it states the above facts, taken from
