In today’s society words like honor and chivalry are used as faded literary postmarks of a bygone era; pithy romantic notions that have no relevance in a modern world. To most people these are simply words, nothing more. To some they are obstacles to be overcome, or worse, ignored. They are something that gets in the way of the greedy and the selfish. But to a very few, they are substantive and meaningful. They are the yardsticks against which our lives are measured. They are the guidelines we construct our thoughts and deeds within to ensure that we live up to what we wish to be. This is not out of fear, guilt or promise of reward. It is out of a genuine and earnest desire to be better than what we are, and to help others to do the same. What is it to be a knight in today’s society? Obviously, it would be hard to ride a horse down main street with a sword strapped to your side. Armor is not exactly what’s “in style” these days, and I doubt you will see many surcoats on any of the fashion shows. Dragons no longer roam free, making it hard to eek out a living slaying them. However, knights are just as needed today as they were in the days of King Arthur! We have committed to hold our brothers and ourselves to a higher standard of personal behavior. The Code, the Measure and the Mission are the tenets by which we live our lives. They are the guiding principles of chivalry that light the way on our quest. The principles that guide us are reflected in symbolism of the Heraldry of the Order. These principles are often difficult to live up to but even the smallest of victories can be immeasurable. Although we are not a religious order we are all pious men of faith. The religious background of our members is varied but all have a common belief: It is only in the service of others that we truly serve ourselves and that it is through this selfless service that we become part of something greater than ourselves. The Code
Thou shalt respect the weak and constitute thyself the defender of them. Thou shalt love the land to which thou hast sworn fealty. Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy. Thou shalt make war upon evil without cessation. Thou shalt scrupulously perform thy noble duties be they not contrary to the laws of the land. Thou shalt be generous and give freely to everyone.
