Thank you to Gamma Phi Beta’s The Crescent for featuring D is for Desk. While remote learning is officially off the table for our local Charlotte students in the coming school year, we are still committed to providing study spaces for students in their homes. Contact us if you know a local student in need, or if you would like to build desks for us.

Stacey Corbin Ellis (George Mason) and her family started D is for Desk – an organization that builds and delivers desks in the Charlotte community to low-income students. When the pandemic first blanketed the world in March 2020, Stacey and her family felt at a loss. It was harder to give back out of safety for themselves and everyone else. Then D is for Desk was born, and it quickly garnered attention from Title I school administrators, teachers, social workers, parents and students. Since then, their organization has raised $800 for building materials, and they have no plans to stop. Read the heartwarming story at http://online.anyflip.com/lwob/lnvq/mobile/index.html =20.

We wanted to give you a quick update, for those who may not have children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Our school board voted to continue in remote learning for at least the next month. At this time, elementary schoolers won't return to the classroom until February 15, with middle and high schoolers starting a three week rotation on February 22 (meaning those students in Group C won't return to a classroom until March 8.) Friends and supporters, we need your help. Even once these students return to the classroom, they will only do so twice a week (elementary) and for one week every three weeks (middle and high schoolers), likely for the rest of the school year. The novelty of online school is fading for many of our scholars, and some are struggling to keep up. We are in great need of desks to help keep students motivated to do the difficult work of remote schooling. Please consider building a desk for us or donating to our building fund through Venmo at . Thank you for your continued support during this challenging year for our students!

A cold but beautiful day Tuesday as volunteer Greg Kohler delivered four beautiful desks he built. With this delivery, we were able to complete deliveries to 60 Pinewood Elementary School scholars. Thanks to your generosity, we have finished serving our lengthy list of Pinewood families in need of a study space. A tremendous thank you to Pinewood staffer Kelsey Healey, who spearheaded this amazing effort for their students! While we may have been able to finish our needs list at Pinewood, there are still lots of students on our waiting list so please consider donating or building for us!

What an inspiring day! Desks 116-124 were very special to us. We are so grateful to Drew Griggs, who chose to support D is for Desk as his Eagle Scout project. Drew worked with his mentor, carpenter James Emery, to build 8 desks for students at Pinewood Elementary School. We went with Drew today to deliver his beautifully crafted desks (complete with a drawer!) to students in need. It was so exciting to see his hard work rewarded with huge smiles of these hard-working students and their families. Stay tuned for plans that detail how to make the same desk that Drew and Mr. Emery created, as they gifted us an awesome set of plans for building these beauties!

Counting our blessings this weekend, and including all of you who have supported D is for Desk on that list! Thanks to your generosity, we have delivered desks to 115 students since launching in early October. Whether you’ve built, donated or delivered for us over the last eight weeks, we are so grateful for you. We are so proud of this work, but we aren’t done yet. As students opt out of in person learning, there is more need than ever for desks for our students.

These gorgeous desks built by Stuart Schmied went to deserving students at Devonshire Elementary today, thanks to volunteer Greg Kohler and his pickup truck! We are sending desks out as quickly as we get them, as many parents are opting their students out of retuning to the classroom and staying in remote learning for the rest of the school year.

If you’ve tried to buy an inexpensive desk lately, you know how hard they are to find. That’s why we were shocked to hit the mother lode at IKEA last week when we found both Linnmon tabletops AND Adils desk legs in stock! We cleaned them out and, thanks to your financial donations, were able to purchase eight more desks for students in need. Now to assemble them. 😂

Whew! Desks 50-81 went out of here so quickly that we didn't even have time to stop for pictures! But here's a picture that will get you going this Saturday. Volunteers from Sardis Presbyterian have built us 21 more desks. This amazing group has dedicated three separate Saturdays to building us gorgeous desks that one of their own members designed specially for us. The great part about these well-built desks is that they're half the size of our normal desks. That means we can fit double the amount in each delivery trip, and it makes them especially great for families who have multiple students in remote learning. Can't wait to get these out to families this week!

Just in the nick of time! Right as we were about to run out of desks, the wonderful folks at Sardis Presbyterian saved the day with ten more. What is it they say about God’s perfect timing? Thank you so much to Glen Crosley, who is a cabinet maker in his daily life. His passion for this project has led to comfortable study spaces for more than 20 local students.
