From the desk of Donna Bowers Burr, a faithful member of the Wadesboro Lions Club.
The Wadesboro Lions Club needs our community’s help.
We are working to rebuild a club that has served this area for many years. Like many long-standing civic organizations, our membership has gradually dwindled as faithful members have grown older and some have passed away. These were people who gave years of service to this community, and now we need a new generation of members to help carry that work forward.
This is not simply a routine membership drive. We truly need people. Without new members, the club cannot continue serving Wadesboro and Anson County as it has in the past.
A lot of people have heard of the Lions Club without really knowing what it does. Lions are probably best known for helping people who are blind or visually impaired. They support vision screenings, access to eye care, eyeglass collection, and efforts to prevent avoidable blindness. As a blind person myself, that mission is especially meaningful to me.
But Lions serve in many other ways, too. Their causes include hunger, diabetes, childhood cancer, youth programs, disaster relief, humanitarian needs, and the environment. Local Lions look at the needs in their own community and find practical ways to help.
The Lions Club motto is simple: “We Serve.”
But service requires people—people with ideas, energy, experience, compassion, and a willingness to show up. You do not have to be wealthy, hold a particular position, or already know someone in the club. You do not need any special qualifications. You simply need to care about people and want Wadesboro and Anson County to remain a community where neighbors help neighbors.
The Wadesboro Lions Club meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Papa Joe’s Pizzeria, located at 911 East Caswell Street in Wadesboro.
Please consider coming to a meeting. Attending does not obligate you to join. Come have dinner, meet us, ask questions, and learn how you might use your own abilities to serve.
If you have ever said that Wadesboro needs more people willing to become involved, this is an opportunity to be one of those people.
This club has a proud history, but history alone cannot keep it going. Its future depends on people in our community stepping forward now.
We really do need your help. Please come and help us rebuild the Wadesboro Lions Club.
