Having Black teachers and other educators of color improves students’ classroom experiences, research shows. They often serve as role models, set high academic expectations and teach material that connects to students’ lives outside of schools.

Yet over the past four decades, the teacher workforce has barely become more diverse, even as the student population has changed.

Many Black teachers were pushed out of classrooms from the 1950s through ‘70s. Despite new recruitment programs, the teacher workforce remains mostly white.

Join us on June 1 at 6:30 PM for a timely briefing from the NC Budget & Tax Center on the current tax policy threats to public K-12 funding, including scheduled state income tax cuts and proposed property tax limits, followed by testimonies from people across the state who are living with the consequences of persistent underfunding.

Our team was honored to support the North Carolina HBCU Caucus last week as they hosted the 4th Annual HBCU Advocacy Day in Raleigh. This event is an outgrowth of Collaborative Initiative, which began in 2021. We are grateful to see this important work continue.
