In 2010, a school zone in West Vancouver tested a road safety idea that looked almost unreal.
Near an elementary school, officials placed a giant 3D road sticker showing a little girl chasing a pink ball. From about 100 feet away, it looked like a real child had run into the street.
The goal was simple: make drivers slow down and pay attention.
The illusion was only there for a week, but it got people talking. Officials said it was not meant to scare drivers. It was meant to remind them that in a school zone, a child can appear at any moment.
Sometimes one powerful image can do what warning signs cannot.
