🎉We are so excited to announce the newest member of our crew here at !!!
🤗 Please welcome John Pierson and read a little more about him:
🔹A deep love for outdoor climbing, mountain biking, backpacking, and winter sports has led John to be a life-long advocate for conservation and the protection of our natural resources. He currently volunteers with local conservancies, public agencies, and private institutions in woodland management studies and native plant restoration.
Joining OCC and its mission in Ohio seemed a natural fit and John helps with organizing events to engage our climbing community. John lives near Cleveland, and you can find him coaching and climbing at Shaker Rocks Gym or enjoying good weather at one of our regional crags. Having traveled to many locations throughout the US and Canada over the last 30 years, John understands the wealth of climbing and other outdoor recreation resources we have here in our home state and is excited to help promote and protect them.

🎉Big thank you to , , and West Branch State Park for improvements to the approach at West Branch Quarry 🙏🏻
🚗The road leading to the Quarry was filled with potholes. The project included blocking off the road just past the parking lot, still allowing access to the area for climbers and other park users. The section of park road between the end of the County road and the Quarry parking lot was “milled” or leveled off. It isn’t paved but the dirt parking lot is now a much larger gravel lot, a major improvement. There is also now an established trail at the back of the parking area that leads to the climbing area, to replace the narrow trail that was there before.
🧗‍♂️If you’re not familiar with the area, it is a great area for beginners. It is a very short approach, about 500’ total. The walls are short, the climbs fun, and it is easy to set up top ropes. There is a practice anchor at ground level to practice threading the anchors. There are also 2 rappelling anchors; one is very easy and great for beginners, the other is a little more challenging. Just in time for the holiday weekend and fall sending temps the Ohio Climbers Coalition is excited to share that the Mushroom Cup Wall at the Mad River Gorge in Springfield! This area features five sport routes ranging in difficulty from 5.6- 5.10- and a beautiful belay platform that was constructed by a team of hardworking climber volunteers!

This project was a long time coming as we have been eyeing this area since the park opened in May 2017, but this wall was just outside of the original park boundaries so we couldn't develop any routes. Thanks to a generous private donor, the Clark County Park District acquired the parcel that included this portion of wall in Fall 2023, and the OCC was able to start work on getting the area ready for climbers.

Due to the steep slope under the wall, we knew we would need to construct a belay platform to ensure the area would be safe for belayers and sustainable as it would help prevent erosion of the slope under the wall. Construction on the belay platform began in April 2025 and was completed in May thanks to all of the climbers who helped dig post holes, haul lumber and tools, and carefully construct the platform and steps.

This summer route development began as the wall was cleaned and bolt placements were carefully determined, and earlier this week it all came together as the routes were officially checked and route information was added to Mountain Project.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who put in 148 volunteer hours in the development of this area, and huge thanks to Tim DeVore from the Clark County Park District Board of Commissioners who came out to help us during our workdays. We also want to thank the Clark County Park District for their continued support of climbing access at the Mad River Gorge (and Veterans Park)!

In August, our good friend will attempt to complete the Cirque of the Towers Traverse in the Wind River Range of Wyoming, a significant and challenging alpine climb.
This route consists of climbing over 5,000 vertical feet and involves summiting 11 major mountain peaks at an average elevation of 12,000 feet above sea level. The objective of the climb is both to honor his son Charlie’s legacy and to raise awareness and support for families who have experienced the unimaginable tragedy of pregnancy or infant loss.
The goal is to raise $1 for every foot climbed for Count the Kicks, a life-saving stillbirth prevention campaign.
Please consider pledging or making a flat donation.
Together, we can make a life-saving impact!

🎉We are so excited to announce and introduce our new Central Ohio Stewardship Director, Matthew Kolberg! Read on for a little info about Matthew :

🪢 I first got into rock climbing in 2020 during the pandemic, and it quickly became one of the most important parts of my life. In those early days, my friends and I would head out into the woods around Athens, Ohio, setting up tree anchors and top-roping whatever rock faces we could find. Those sessions sparked a deep love for the sport.
After graduating from Ohio University in 2023 and moving back to Columbus, I found myself fully immersed in the local climbing scene. I spent as much time as I could at the climbing gyms and made regular trips out to the Mad River Gorge whenever the chance came up.
In 2025, I attended my first Ohio Climbers Coalition event, helping build a belay platform at the Gorge. I loved every minute of it. That experience really solidified my passion for climbing advocacy and conservation. The idea that I could give back to the climbing community and help preserve access for future generations is what motivated me to get more involved with OCC.
Through advocacy and stewardship, I hope to help preserve and improve climbing access across Central Ohio and continue building a strong, inclusive community around the sport I love.

📣IMPORTANT INFO📣
The Ohio Climbers Coalition is actively working with Ohio’s Stroud’s Run State Park on opening a sport climbing area, (aka Horseman’s) and efforts are at a very sensitive stage.
🔺Sport climbing has never been permitted at Stroud’s, so:

‼️IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL CLIMBERS ABSTAIN FROM ROPED CLIMBING there so as to not jeopardize efforts to open this area in the future‼️

📌We will keep you posted as we get updates and if you have any questions please feel free to DM us.
