oof. I don't normally play horror games, because they're usually cheapshots, but this might be worth the play. damn. love them both.
Fear is the entire design premise of OD, a horror title whose name is short for overdosing on fear. Hideo Kojima set out to push "beyond the limit of the 'scariness' that other games had reached," and he's been direct about his goal: "It's a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible," he said.
One of the bigger reveals is a reportedly cloud-assisted system meant to stop players from abandoning the game at its scariest points, letting them continue without losing any content. Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis both appear in the project, with their performances captured one by one.
OD marks Kojima's first dedicated horror game under Kojima Productions, from the designer behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding. He's co-writing it with Jordan Peele, the filmmaker behind Get Out, Us, and Nope, who brings a different register of dread to the project.
The team has described Peele's contribution as a distinct kind of fear, separate from the existential unease Kojima is known for. It's rare for a major studio to hand co-authorship of a game's story to a sitting Oscar-winning filmmaker, and Peele's sensibility, social unease, slow-build paranoia, punchlines that curdle, sits at the spine of OD alongside Kojima's vision.
Those remarks come out of Entertainment Weekly's Xbox 25th-anniversary feature. Xbox platform head Asha Sharma called OD a "deeply moving game" and "another kind of game." Kojima says he shopped the concept widely and nearly every company told him he was "crazy." Xbox was the one that didn't.
The game was first unveiled at The Game Awards in 2023, with a teaser called Knock following in 2025 and a new screenshot arriving earlier this year. No release date has been announced.
