Help us invest in Midwifery Care in WV! Support SB993!!

When midwives are by women's side through pregnancy and birth, health outcomes improve & women are happier with their care. They are more likely to have:

πŸ‘©πŸ» Positive birth experiences
πŸ’• More natural births
βœ‚οΈ Fewer medical interventions

To improve the health of mums & babies, WHO urges countries to invest in lifesaving midwifery models of care.

Did you know that your homebirth midwife can collect your prenatal lab work?
All routine labs are done at the clinic or in your home when you work with Highland Birth Support πŸ’•
A lot of patients are surprised when I recommend things like a glucose test or group beta strep testing- thinking perhaps homebirth is just twinkle lights and herbal teas πŸ˜‰
But a huge part of midwifery is risk assessment during pregnancy! These tests help us determine your health and your risks during birth. They can also help us figure out the best birth setting for you and baby to stay safest. It’s never homebirth or bust! And I will keep supporting you no matter where we end up πŸ₯°

🀝 At NACPM, we know strong partnerships make safer, more respectful care possible. The Relationship Building with Hospitals guide shows how midwives, hospitals, EMS, and care teams can work together with trust, shared accountability, and respect.

πŸ‘Ά Community-based midwives improve access and continuity of care, but partnerships with hospitals need clear pathways and understanding. When we collaborate, families experience smoother transitions, safer referrals, and care rooted in dignity and equity.

Supporting licensure of CPM Midwifery in West Virginia

These faces represent dedication, compassion, skill, and a deep commitment to birthing people and families across our state. Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) and CPM students are walking alongside families in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, offering individualized, relationship-based, evidence-informed care rooted in trust and autonomy.

For many midwives, CPM midwifery means:
πŸ–€ Honoring physiologic birth
πŸ–€ Preserving traditional and community-based knowledge
πŸ–€ Expanding access to safe, out-of-hospital birth options
πŸ–€ Serving rural, underserved, and marginalized families
πŸ–€ Keeping birth local, personal, and family-centered

For West Virginia, supporting CPM licensure means:
✨ Stronger birth workforce
✨ More access to maternity care
✨ Better birth outcomes
✨ More options for families
✨ A step toward addressing our maternal health crisis

We are proudly supporting HB5501 to establish licensure for CPMs in West Virginia.

πŸ‘‰ CPMs and CPM students: Share your photo in the comments and tell us where you practice (or plan to practice) and what midwifery means to you and how licensure would benefit you!

Let’s show our legislators the faces and voices behind this work in our wild and wonderful state of West Virginia! πŸ’™πŸ’›

Midwives are stepping in where systems have stepped away. In West Virginia, the New York Times highlights how community based midwifery care is expanding access in places facing hospital closures and maternity care deserts.

At NACPM, this work is about more than geography. It’s about birth justice, dignity, and evidence based care that meets families where they are. Certified Professional Midwives provide relationship centered support across pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, especially in communities that have been historically underserved.

This is what systemic change can look like when care is rooted in community, trust, and equity. NACPM is proud to advocate for CPMs and community centered birth care that expands access, protects choice, and strengthens the future of midwifery.

We’re so proud of our very own Staysha Quentrill!

Staysha was recently featured in The New York Times article highlighting the incredible work of midwives in West Virginia. Her passion, dedication, and advocacy for birth autonomy and accessible care truly reflect what midwifery is all about.

This recognition is not just for one, but for our whole team of midwives each working toward meaningful change, stronger communities, and more supported births across our state.

We’re honored to have Staysha as part of our team and so proud of the impact she and all of us are making together. πŸ’™

West Virgina taught me how to become a midwife. Forever will be grateful, to the midwives that have cared for me in all moments of this journey.

To all the families, woman and babies that have allowed me to hold a hand, braid your hair, give a hug, and say a prayer, Thank you.
