South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust

South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust Preserving battlegrounds and historic military sites in South Carolina for more than thirty years. Many of our state’s historic sites have been destroyed.

South Carolina has played a pivotal role in the shaping of our nation. During the Revolutionary War there were more battles and skirmishes in South Carolina than any other colony. Like Virginia, Civil War conflicts and battles marked the state during the entirety of the war. The many surviving battle sites in South Carolina tell the story of our nation’s struggle for freedom. They are poignant rem

inders of our past and offer lessons for our future. Since 1991, the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust has worked with private property owners, developers, and communities to obtain conservation easements and deed transfers to protect our important historic resources for future generations. State and national parks have preserved only a small portion of South Carolina’s heritage sites. There is much to be done, but we cannot accomplish our mission without your help and support.

George Washington's example has served as a model for democratic leadership worldwide, setting the United States on a path distinct from so many other nations. In choosing retirement over dictatorship, he truly became, in the words of his contemporaries, “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

Research- it’s a part of our mission. Some days we are scouring archives for maps and journals. Other days, we are answering the call of a landowner who has plowed up secrets of the past when working their fields.

Today, our team visited with an Orangeburg County landowner with some interesting findings. More research is needed to understand if his artifacts are battefield related.

The land holds stories and your membership helps us research, protect, and interpret them.
