South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust Preserving battlegrounds and historic military sites in South Carolina for more than thirty years. Many of our state’s historic sites have been destroyed.

South Carolina has played a pivotal role in the shaping of our nation. During the Revolutionary War there were more battles and skirmishes in South Carolina than any other colony. Like Virginia, Civil War conflicts and battles marked the state during the entirety of the war. The many surviving battle sites in South Carolina tell the story of our nation’s struggle for freedom. They are poignant reminders of our past and offer lessons for our future. Since 1991, the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust has worked with private property owners, developers, and communities to obtain conservation easements and deed transfers to protect our important historic resources for future generations. State and national parks have preserved only a small portion of South Carolina’s heritage sites. There is much to be done, but we cannot accomplish our mission without your help and support.

Same tree, different voice. Because battlefields are kind of a big deal.

Near the town of Eutawville, South Carolina, stands a massive live oak with a canopy as wide as half a football field. The so-called Witness Tree has seen a lot over the centuries, including the last major battle of the Revolutionary War in the Carolinas. ⁠

Now, chains that once saved it after a lightning strike are cutting off its supply of water and nutrients. ⁠

🗞"Wise, an Army veteran and S.C. historian, knows the tree would have been in the middle of the fighting. Toward the end of the battle, British forces were staged in a two-story brick house. As Continental troops approached, this tree would have stretched over their right flank, Wise said."

The men who fought on the Eutaw Springs Battlefield have passed away long ago. But efforts are underway to maintain a “witness tree” that was in the thick of the fighting.

June 28, 1776 and the battle fought on that date was significant. The wind ushered in legend. The small palmetto log fort, and between the logs walls to absorb the British cannon balls, of which some 7,000 were recovered in and around the fort after the battle. The fear that American General Charles Lee and others had that the British fleets broadsides would tear the fort and its garrison apart, instead turned to the legend of the spongy palmetto logs and sand deflecting or absorbing the best that was thrown at it.
