Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Did you know one of the earliest and most historically significant Memorial Day commemorations took place right here in Charleston in May 1865? Freedmen gathered to honor Union soldiers who had been buried in unmarked graves—creating a powerful tribute that helped shape the tradition we continue today.

In Charming Charleston, history lives on through remembrance, reflection, and gratitude. As we honor the past, we commit to carrying forward a legacy of service, unity, and love.
