Freddie took part in a photography exhibit for Family Connection of South Carolina.

LOOK!™ is a photography collection that offers a glimpse into the unique abilities of children and youth with a disability or chronic health condition.

I was filled with so much joy watching each kid make their way down the red carpet. Some marched excitedly full of confidence. Some needed a helping hand. But all of them had huge smiles. It was beautiful.

With all the heavy conversations going around the internet lately about prenatal diagnoses, I felt compelled to share something. I thought about how when we first learned that Freddie had Down syndrome, and the way it changed how I saw the world. We had a lot of questions about what the future would look like. Today, I can tell you that our lives are brighter, more joyful, and more filled with love because he is in it. I can also say that I have spent far more time in a hospital with him than I ever imagined as a parent. I know way too much medical jargon than I feel is necessary in life. I have been on some winding, mind breaking roads with him. But I would do it again. This is real life.
He brings so much life to our family and gives amazing high fives and some serious eye rolls. Down syndrome is a part of who he is, but his worth is immeasurable.
Parenting IS hard.
And disability can happen at any time.
Down syndrome has taught me how to appreciate life more fully. Humans are fascinating, even the ones with extra chromosomes. 💙💛

Can you believe he's going to be 10 years old on June 14??❤️🥹

I feel like it's been 100 days since last Wednesday. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Freddie came out with this terrible bruise and I was told it's from a neck stabilizer.
"Sometimes that happens."
I get it. Medicine is science. But be more careful.

Also, he had a weird reaction to the dilating drops for his "eye exam". His pupils stayed huge for almost 3 days. 🥺

Today was long and tiring. Freddie had three scopes and the T&A was not done. Which is fine because I thought it was a lot. And I felt confirmed in my concerns when others agreed it was a lot for Freddie. Turns out his tonsils and adenoids don't need to be removed. But I learned that his tongue falls back when he sleeps. That would explain the obstructive sleep apnea. He had some biopsies taken and some blood work that seems off. But we are home. ❤️

They dilated his eyes for the ophthalmologist to get a good look while under sedation and he was supposed to be measured for glasses. He has astigmatism and is slightly near sighted but "not enough to make him wear glasses". I was told "kids like Freddie don't wear glasses". 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was exhausted and not really processing everything in real time but...WHAT? This is why kids like Freddie fall through the cracks.
