Coastal Shark Tagging Initiative (CSTI) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which specializes in the study of shark species found along the Atlantic coastline. Our mission is to collect data on sharks that specifically inhabit the surf zone where they often converge with the human population. We use a traditional rod and reel method approach to capturing these sharks from the beach

and work quickly to record measurements and other vitals before tagging and releasing. CSTI uses both static paper tags in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Apex Predator program, as well as sophisticated satellite tags to track the shark's behavior and migration patterns. Before forming CSTI, our research team has tagged and maintained detailed records of nearly 200 sharks that measured over 5-feet, including a 12 and a half-foot tiger shark. The data collected is utilized for shark education, along with a working partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to promote conservation efforts.
