This morning, an Islands Against Cancer, Inc. technology package is heading from Charleston, South Carolina, to a warrior in Kentucky facing Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer that has spread to his brain.

His caregiver found IAC while researching help for someone she loves. Today, we’re sending tools to help them manage his care, along with ongoing support and our signature sunshirt. We want them to feel supported and welcomed into our IAC family.

IAC began with Pat Campbell and his daughter, Keri, during his fight with pancreatic cancer. Pat wanted to help others even as he faced his own diagnosis. That commitment continues with every family we serve.

Cancer patients and caregivers need practical help wherever they live. Your support helps us respond when they reach out, whether they are here in Charleston or several states away.

Just like that - Surviving looks a bit different, especially for this family! So many people pray for the outcome that this warrior and her family have been blessed to receive, and we, as her IAC family, are so fortunate to be able to be a small part of it! Don't ever Give Up; your life means something to you and to those who love you...keep asking questions and keep searching for answers; you just might get what you thought was impossible!

We’ve been holding our breath to ensure that we had good news before posting this…and we do! Our warrior family member has beat the odds and is through surgery with clear margins!

We are thrilled to be here to support however we can!

Monday check-in.

Today, Islands Against Cancer, Inc accompanied a Warrior to her appointment, recorded the visit with permission, and provided her with a printed summary to take home.

Then we made sure she had a snack as she settled in for another chemotherapy treatment.

Sometimes support means helping someone understand what the doctor said. Sometimes it means making sure they do not face a difficult appointment alone. Sometimes it is simply bringing them something to eat.

This is what patient navigation looks like. We show up, listen, help and stay beside our Warriors through the hard days.

We love and support The Point. When we have an opportunity to support their fundraising efforts, we do everything we can to help.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we want to talk about something you might notice on the cover of our book, My Child Has Cancer—Now What?

Why would we include ChatGPT in a book for parents navigating childhood cancer?

Because when used responsibly, AI can be an incredibly helpful tool for organizing, preparing, and understanding information during an overwhelming time.

A parent might leave an appointment with pages of notes, unfamiliar medical terms, new medications, test results, and a list of questions they forgot to ask.

AI programs can help turn that information into something easier to work with.

You can ask it to help you:

• Create questions to take to the next oncology appointment
• Explain unfamiliar medical terminology in plain language
• Organize a list of medications or symptoms for a conversation with the care team
• Create a checklist before an appointment
• Help you think of questions about side effects, school, nutrition, or daily life
• Turn complicated information into a list of topics to discuss with your child’s doctors
• Prepare for conversations with family members, teachers or caregivers

But there is an important distinction.

ChatGPT, along with other AI programs, is not your oncologist.

It should not diagnose your child, decide whether a treatment is right or wrong, tell you to start or stop medication, or replace the medical professionals caring for your child.

We teach families to use AI to prepare better questions, organize information, and participate more confidently in their care.

We also encourage families to protect their privacy. You do not need to enter a child’s name, date of birth, medical record number, or other identifying information to ask most health-navigation questions.

That is why our book does not simply tell parents to “use ChatGPT.” It gives them 150 prompts designed to show them what to ask and how this technology fits into responsible medical navigation.

Cancer already asks families to learn an entirely new language while they are frightened, exhausted, and trying to care for someone they love.

If technology helps make one piece of that easier to understand, we believe families deserve to know how to use it wisely.
