This morning, Islands Against Cancer, Inc received a call that reminded us exactly why this mission matters.

A terminal cancer patient in Pennsylvania reached out to our organization after hearing about our program through someone else. We still do not know exactly how our name reached her, but somehow word about what we do traveled from person to person until it found someone who needed support.

She explained to us that she had been told that we help patients navigate the apps, portals, and technology that have become such a large part of cancer care. She understood that we provide iPads to help patients better manage appointments, records, communication, and resources. She also believed there would be someone available to talk with her, guide her, and help advocate for her from Charleston, South Carolina.

What hit us hardest was hearing her say she attends most of her appointments alone.

There are so many patients across this country trying to manage fear, treatment, technology, appointments, test results, and life changes without enough support. Stories like this reinforce what we have known from the beginning. This need is everywhere.

Some days it is hard knowing there is only so much a small organization can do with the distance between the people who need help and us. We wish we could be everywhere at once.

But today reminded us that compassion travels. People are sharing our mission with one another. Families are talking. Patients are talking. Caregivers are talking, and somehow, a woman in a hospital in Pennsylvania found comfort knowing there were people in Charleston, South Carolina, willing to help her feel a little less alone.

That means more to us than words can explain.

We are revamping our website to make it USEABLE.

If you would like to help us continue supporting cancer patients and caregivers across the country, donations can be made through Venmo at or by mailing a check to:

After extensive planning, outreach, meetings, and collaboration efforts, Islands Against Cancer, Inc has made the difficult decision to postpone the June 17 Cancer Support Expo.

This was not an easy decision.

Our goal was to create a meaningful event that brought together warriors, caregivers, nonprofits, healthcare professionals, and businesses in one place for support, education, and connection. Unfortunately, we did not receive the level of participation needed to responsibly move forward with the event in the way our community deserves.

While disappointing, this is not the end of the mission. If anything, this process showed us that many warriors and caregivers need support in smaller, more personal, and more accessible ways throughout the community.

Because of that, we are already exploring new outreach opportunities and collaborative efforts that allow us to meet warriors where they are.

Most importantly, Islands Against Cancer is still here.

We continue to provide support, advocacy, technology assistance, educational resources, and guidance to cancer patients and caregivers navigating difficult healthcare journeys.

If you or someone you love needs assistance, support, or resources, please reach out to us directly.

If you are a business, healthcare provider, volunteer, sponsor, or community member interested in partnering with us for future outreach events and programs, we would love to connect with you as we develop our next steps.

Thank you to every vendor, sponsor, volunteer, warrior, caregiver, and supporter who believed in this vision and stepped up to support us. We are grateful to every one of you.

A Note about Our CEO, Keri Seay πŸ’œ

If you follow Keri Seay, you know she doesn't believe in accidents.

At 4:30 a.m. - working, like usual - she felt a pull to research apps that could better serve our cancer warriors and their caregivers through the IAC iPads. One name kept coming up: CaringBridge. Keri already knew the platform well, having watched people close to her use it to share their stories and keep loved ones updated through their own health journeys.
So she did what Keri does. She tracked down the CEO of CaringBridge and sent a message through LinkedIn at 4:30 a.m.
By 4:45 a.m., she had a response.

One week later, IAC's CEO and CaringBridge's CEO were on a Zoom call together - talking support, strategy, and the families they both serve. CaringBridge reaches all 50 states and more than 242 countries around the world, and they were genuinely interested in what IAC had to say and what we have to offer.

The conversation is still evolving, and this partnership has legs.
Here's what it means for our community: CaringBridge is now a staple app on every IAC iPad for our cancer warriors and their caregivers. We're also adding registration support and hands-on assistance with the app to our standard procedures, so no one has to figure it out alone.

We are absolutely thrilled that a 4:30 a.m. hunch turned into a contact, and a contact turned into a partnership - because it was meant to be.

We have so much more in the works. Stay tuned. πŸ’œ

Cancer doesn't just change a diagnosis. It changes a family. A schedule. A future.

On June 17, we're opening the doors to the Cancer Support Expo, a day built around one belief: no one walking this road should ever feel invisible.

Whether you're newly diagnosed, deep into treatment, in remission, caregiving for someone you love, or grieving someone you lost - there is a place for you in this room.

Bring your questions. Bring your story. Bring someone who needs to hear they're not alone.

Save the date. Tag someone who should know about this.

From Keri Seay - CEO of Islands Against Cancer, Inc

"I met someone today who stopped me in my tracks.

Robert Dorchak Jr. was at the SouthEastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and his story is the kind that needs to be heard by everyone. A Stage 3C cancer survivor who walked right up to the brink of giving in to death and somehow found his way back to the other side. Faith. Fight. Fearless hope.

He wrote a book about it: 10 Commandments to Survivorship. πŸ‘‰ https://amzn.to/4tFMkvF, and he built an app, , that walks warriors through health tracking, journaling, community, and advocacy. πŸ‘‰ https://www.whoaremyangels.com/

Here's the part that gave me chills. We had been working on an app of our own for IAC and stepped away from it because it was pulling our focus from our programs. When Robert walked me through his app, I realized it covers about 98% of what we set out to build. Already done. Already beautiful. Already in the hands of the man who lived it.

We're looking into loading his app onto every iPad we distribute to warriors in our program so they have it the moment they need it.

If you've ever sat in a waiting room and wondered who in the world could possibly understand, this is the voice you've been waiting for. Scan the codes in the graphic, or follow the links above. Get his book. Use his app. Support a survivor whose perspective is too important to miss."
