Inclement Weather Information for Residents
Charles City County is closely monitoring current and forecasted winter weather conditions, including the potential for snow, sleet, freezing rain, power outages, and hazardous travel. County leadership, public safety, public works, and emergency management staff are coordinating to ensure essential services remain available and that residents have access to critical resources.
The County’s Shelter Operations Plan and Emergency Response protocols are in place to support residents who may be impacted by prolonged outages, unsafe temperatures, or limited access to transportation.
County Office Closure-
Residents are encouraged to remain at home and avoid travelling during the most severe periods of the storm. County government offices are anticipated to be closed on Monday, January 26.
Essential services will continue to operate as conditions allow.
Shelter Operations Plan-
The County’s Shelter Operations Plan is designed to:
• Provide temporary shelter during severe weather events
• Support residents affected by power outages or unsafe living conditions
• Coordinate services with public safety, health, and emergency management partners
• Ensure access to basic needs, including warmth, safety, and information
Shelter activation will be communicated through official County channels, including the County website and emergency notifications.
Warming Stations and Shelter Locations
In accordance with the County’s Shelter Operations Plan, an emergency shelter is scheduled to open as follows:
Shelter Address (Social Center): 8320 Ruthville Road, Providence Forge, VA 23140
Shelter Opening Date: Saturday, January 23, 2026
Public Opening Time: 5:00 p.m.
On-Site Support:
• A Sheriff’s Deputy will be present
• A medic from the Charles City Volunteer Fire Department (as available)
Guest Guidance: Shelter guests are encouraged to bring their own water, snacks, food, medications, and personal items.

Additional shelter staffing and support personnel will be assigned as needed.
Warming Stations and Shelter Locations-
During periods of extreme cold or extended power outages, the following facilities may be utilized as warming stations or emergency shelters, as conditions warrant:

Warming stations will generally operate from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., unless otherwise announced. Availability and operating hours will be announced based on weather conditions and community needs.
Power Outage Preparedness and Reporting-
Residents are encouraged to prepare in advance for possible power outages and to report outages promptly using the following resources:

Residents should stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and immediately report them to Dominion Energy.
Residents are encouraged to:
• Prepare emergency kits with water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries
• Fully charge electronic devices before storms arrive
• Limit travel during hazardous conditions
• Check on elderly neighbors and individuals with special needs
• Remain indoors when possible during severe weather
