The American Legion is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support America's veterans, their families, and communities through the four pillars it was founded upon: Americanism, children and youth, strong national defense, and Veterans Affairs and rehabilitation. The Chamberlain American Legion was chartered in Chamberlain, South Dakota July 7, 1919. It was designated as Potter Post No. 3
after Carl and Oscar Potter, two brothers from Chamberlain who served during World War I. Army as a member of a machine gun battalion in May of 1918. Oscar was mortally wounded during the last drive of Argonne and died the next day on November 10, the day before the Armistice was signed. His younger brother Carl Potter joined the U.S. Army June 1918 as an infantryman. Carl died in France October 4, 1918 from pneumonia. The Potter brothers were later laid to rest in Chamberlain. Today Potter Post No. 3 continues their legacy of service to our country and community. Potter Post No. 3 runs several services and programs open to the community and its veterans.
