Public Notice
October 2, 2026
Dear Residents:
It has come to my attention that there have been rumors circulating within our community that the Eleanor Daggett Memorial Library is closing. I want to assure our residents that this information is incorrect. The library is not closing.
The Eleanor Daggett Memorial Library will be moving to a new location at 1510 State Highway 17, Chama, New Mexico 87520. While this location is a little smaller than we would ultimately like for our library, it is the property the Village was able to purchase at this time. One of the benefits of the new location is that it is closer to the center of town and will provide easier access for our children, families, and other community members.
The Village Council and I recognize how important the library is to our community, and we share a larger vision for its future. Our long-term goal is to eventually relocate the library to the old Village Hall building. The Village is currently working to identify funding opportunities that would allow us to repair and renovate this building.
Our vision is to transform the old Village Hall into a community-centered facility that could provide space for the Eleanor Daggett Memorial Library, wellness and mental health resources, community meetings, programs, and other services that benefit the residents of Chama.
This is a larger project that will require planning, funding, and time to accomplish. However, we believe the old Village Hall has the potential to once again become an important place for out community.
Most importantly, I want our residents to know that the Eleanor Daggett Memorial Library is not closing. The Village remains committed to maintaining library services for our community while continuing to work toward the larger goal we have for the library’s future.
We appreciate your patience and support as we make this transition. The Village Council and I will continue to do our best to keep this larger vision moving forward and to pursue opportunities that will benefit our residents for years to come.
Sincerely,
Ernest E. Vigil
Mayor
