Like many families who receive a rare disease diagnosis, this poem was shared with us and it hit differently than we expected.

At first, there were so many mixed emotions. We were grieving the ordinary life we had imagined for ourselves. We felt like we had done something wrong, questioning every decision we had made. Did we book the wrong flight? Miss a connection somewhere? There had to be an answer.

But rare diseases don’t wait for you to be ready. AHC didn’t offer a grace period. It showed up without warning, kicked our door down, and permanently made itself at home.

Our day-to-day looks nothing like we would have imagined or asked for. And we wouldn’t trade it, because it’s our life. It’s Archie’s life. Full of chaos, fear, simple joys, and an overwhelming, immeasurable amount of love.

Italy looks beautiful. But this unexpected journey to Holland? It has changed us for the better, in ways we never could have planned.
