Who was the first person to put a club in your hand?

Who was the first person to put a club in your hand?

Rickie Fowler's middle name is Yutaka. Most people who watch him play never ask why.

Yutaka "Taka" Tanaka was Fowler's maternal grandfather, born in California to Japanese immigrant parents. As a child during World War II, he spent part of his childhood at the Heart Mountain War Relocation Center in Wyoming. He's said he was too young to fully understand what was happening at the time. Details about what happened to his family immediately after the war are unclear.

Years later, that same man would pick a small boy up from school around 2 p.m. and drive him to the Murrieta Valley driving range. Not a country club. A public range, in a small California town, with a grandfather who'd already been through more than most people ever will. They hit balls together. They fished together. Tanaka would later describe his grandson as quiet, patient with a rod in his hand, and something else entirely once a club was in it.

That relationship became one of the most influential of Fowler's life. So influential that he had his grandfather's name tattooed in Japanese on the inside of his left bicep — a tribute Tanaka has said touched him deeply.

Here's the part worth sitting with: none of this happened at a fancy academy. It happened because one man kept showing up at 2 p.m., week after week, at a driving range, because that's what he had time and love for. Most of us didn't get taught the game by a Tour pro either. We got taught by a grandfather, a dad, a neighbor with a bucket of range balls and nowhere better to be.

That's the whole game, really. Somebody hands it to you. You spend the rest of your life trying to hand it back.

Who was the person that first put a club in your hands — and did they ever find out what it turned into?

Unfortunately, we have to cancel golf tonight at Oak Haven! 😔⛳️

They are closing the golf course, and the banquet hall is also closed due to an event. We really did try to make it work, but unfortunately, we have to cancel.

I’m so sorry for the last-minute cancellation and appreciate everyone’s understanding! ❤️

I look forward to seeing everyone for the Fall Session on September 16!🍂⛳️ Hopefully, the weather will cooperate with us this time! 🤞☀️

Our final night of summer session! With a more than soggy golf course, we had to be inside this evening!

The girls had a fun warm up and shared what grade they were going into and who their teacher would be.

The girls also made duck key chains! They picked out their ducks and ribbons and made their key chains!

Next we put on our Golf Course Architect hat’s! The girls worked in teams to create a golf hole. They had requirements to meet with each hole. They had to name the hole, tell is it is a par 3,4, or 5. Each hole needed a hazard, a tee box, a green, rough and a fairway. From there the sky was the limit on their creativity. It was great to see the girls create! Finally they needed to tell how much they charge for people to play their hole!

Once the holes were created the girls had to put on their golf course sales hats! They needed to sell the eLeaders on playing their hole! They had 3 minutes to present and then take questions from the eLeader judges. The eLeader judges had to go outside and discuss which hole they wanted to go play. We have a picture of the judges with our winning team!!

So sorry we were not able to get on the golf course this evening! But we had LPGA-USGA Girls Golf anyway!

Thank you to all of our eLeaders for showing up this evening and helping our girls have fun and learn!

Also a special thank you to Isabelle’s mom who treated our coaches with Crumbl cookies tonight! That was a good surprise!

Our final night of summer session this evening was a huge success! The girls took their skills back out to the golf course AND they played great!!

They played a scramble on a hole and then they played their own ball on another hole. They focused on keeping their scores as well tonight!

Thank you to all of our coaches who showed up this evening for our girls.

We wish the girls all the best as they head back to school. We are looking forward to Fall session which starts on 9/17.
