A Better You: Hobbies Help You Feel Better Inside and Out

Hobbies are more than a way to pass time—they can be a powerful ally in your health journey. Whether it’s painting, hiking or solving a puzzle, hobbies have a way of keeping your mind sharp, hands busy and keeping stress in check.

Beyond the joy they bring, they can help you move more, eat more mindfully and find balance in the chaos of daily life. The secret to better health might just be hidden in the things you love doing most! And if you don’t have a go-to hobby yet, there’s no better time to start—trying something new might be exactly what your health (and happiness) needs.

5 Physical Benefits of Hobbies

1. Keeps Your Mind and Hands Busy
When you’re caught up in a hobby at home, it’s easier to avoid mindless eating. Whether you’re knitting a scarf, perfecting your latte art or researching your genealogy, these activities redirect your focus and keep cravings at bay.

2. Encourages Physical Activity
Active hobbies like walking, gardening or weightlifting naturally boost your activity levels. Even moderate movement can add up over time, helping you stay on track with your fitness goals and supporting better overall health. Plus, they get you out of the house and away from tempting treats in the pantry.

3. Boosts Energy Levels
Active hobbies not only burn calories but also build stamina and increase energy. Moving your body in ways you enjoy can make everyday tasks—like walking up the stairs or heading into the grocery store from the back of the parking lot feel easier.

4. Improves Healthy Skills
Cooking and meal-prepping hobbies are especially valuable for weight loss. When you learn to prepare delicious, nutritious meals, you’re in control of your choices and more likely to stick to your healthy eating habits. Also, by getting hands-on in the kitchen, you become more mindful of what goes into your food, making you more selective and knowledgeable about the ingredients being used.

5. Promotes Social Connection
Certain hobbies, like joining a walking group, attending a cooking class or participating in a book club, help you build meaningful connections. Becoming involved in these activities with fellow TOPS members can deepen those relationships, while cultivating new friendships with people outside of TOPS provides more opportunities for accountability and encouragement.

5 Mental Benefits of Hobbies
1. Reduces Stress
Life can be overwhelming, and stress often leads to emotional eating or unhealthy habits. Relaxing hobbies like painting, journaling or tending to plants offer a peaceful way to calm your mind and reduce stress levels.

2. Boosts Mental Health
Hobbies boost your mood and ease feelings of anxiety or depression. Doing activities you enjoy provides a sense of accomplishment and purpose, keeping you motivated and positive. Setting and reaching goals within your hobbies can also build confidence and carry over to your health and wellness efforts, helping you tackle challenges and celebrate your progress.

3. Encourages Mindfulness
Hobbies that require focus, like pottery, photography or sewing, help you stay present in the moment. This mindfulness can even carry over to your eating habits, making it easier to tune into your hunger and fullness cues.

4. Brings Balance to Your Day
Adding a hobby to your routine creates a sense of structure and purpose to your day, helping to reduce boredom—a common trigger for overeating—and keeping you on track with your goals. On the flip side, hobbies break up the day’s monotony, bringing spontaneity and excitement to keep things fresh and fun.

5. Improves Focus and Cognitive Function
Many hobbies—like puzzles, reading or playing a musical instrument—challenge your brain, improving concentration and cognitive function. Keeping your mind active in fun, engaging ways keeps you sharp and improves your problem-solving skills, which can also support your overall health goals.

5 Mental Paths to Improve Your Wellbeing
by Rachel Werner

Nothing goes perfectly for any of us every single day. Pets get sick. Appliances break. Weekend plans suddenly shift. And somehow, all the laundry is never ever done. When a plethora of “little things” pile up, it gets difficult to maintain the energy to prioritize healthy living.
These are the days it gets far too easy to order takeout, skip going to the gym or miss a chapter meeting or two. Staying motivated is tricky at times. So, the next time you feel stuck on your wellness journey, use this mental visualization technique to positively refocus on your goals.

Start by sitting in a comfortable position, then close your eyes and begin to imagine there are five paths in front of you. Which of the following do you feel most drawn to?

The Straight Path: At this moment, you crave ease above all else. Envision doing short stretches in the morning or preparing soup for supper to keep life simple for the next few days ahead.

The U-Turn: You allow yourself to acknowledge how much you miss the water aerobics class you have not done in a while. Make a mental note to ask a friend to go with you soon to nix not going becoming your new norm.

The New Trail: You have saved several recipes this year from TOPS News, but have yet to try any of them. Visualize yourself in the kitchen making 2-3 within the next week.

The Challenging Trek: Maybe you already sense that a new challenge is needed to move past your current plateau. Consider whether you are willing to commit to making meatless meals on Mondays for a full month. Or sign up to participate in a local 5k event!

The Social Stroll: If only you could bottle the enthusiasm you get during chapter meetings for those days when it feels like you are slugging through it solo. Remind yourself that fellow members are usually just a phone call, text or email away. Also, consider coordinating a weekly group stroll outside of your regular meeting times if others would find it helpful, too.

Which of these paths are you curious to explore next?

Enjoy the textures of gooey lemon-y goodness paired with a flavorful crust. This classic is revised to reduce sugar and calories. If you want to go one step further, feel free to use a sugar substitute such as Swerve etc.
