✨EVENT TODAY✨ With some new faces around here, we wanted to take a moment to tell you a little more about Cazenovia Heritage and why our work is so important. We are comprised of citizens who advocate for the Village and Town of Cazenovia, its village shops and livable neighborhoods, its lakeside homes and recognizable farmhouses. We envision a community that honors, celebrates, and preserves its past to build a sustainable future where people and the economy can thrive.

So why the picture of the one-room schoolhouse? Today’s event starts at 2pm and will be held at the beautiful Rippleton Schoolhouse at Lorenzo State Historic Site. It features a presentation by Carl Stearns who will discuss the architecture of early schoolhouses and specific restoration work completed for the Rippleton Schoolhouse. You’ll be invited in to take a look for yourself, to see original details and restored ones, to witness the time and effort made by folks who truly value historic preservation.

We hope you’ll make it to today’s event (rain or shine!) and consider becoming a member of Cazenovia Heritage. We need your support in helping preserve and upkeep the beautiful architecture Cazenovia has to offer.

Happy Friday! You know what this means — another installment of Foundation Fridays by Cazenovia Heritage.

This week we’re taking a look at the very beautiful 53 Albany St. Its first floor is home to H. Grey Supply Co. and the rest of the building is made up of apartments. The first picture shows Leonard Dwyer and his wife Marcia in front of their Dwyer Pharmacy, which purchased and moved to 53 Albany in 1970 after a fire at their previous location. The building is currently owned by Allison and Andy, Leonard and Marcia’s children.

A “modern general store,” owners of H. Grey, Alex and Travis, have set out to offer a little of everything for the local shopper. Upon renting the space in 2021, they contracted local artist Alex Barnes to paint the first floor facade, giving it a refreshing new look while maintaining the building’s historic character.

In its long history, 53 Albany has been home to several different businesses. In one ad taken out in the Cazenovia Republican in 1930, the shop owner of the Public Market declared it “Cazenovia’s most modern food store” and today H. Grey offers its customers unique and delicious pantry items they can’t find at the average supermarket! History has such an interesting way of repeating itself, huh?

It’s time for another installment of ✨Foundation Fridays✨, a series where we examine the history of some of the great historic buildings in Cazenovia’s business district. This week we’re taking a look at 58 Albany St, current home to J.S. Hight & Sons Fine Wine & Spirits owned and operated by Judith Hight.

58 Albany has worn many hats over the years. In 1887 it was a “boots & shoes” retailer and, in fact, served as a wine & spirits retailer for 60 consecutive years up until 1995 when Caz Cordial Shoppe closed its doors. When asked for the Cazenovia Republican, store owner Chris Shields attributed the store’s closure to competition from “discount liquor warehouse operations which sell spirits for far less than a small store can buy it wholesale.” Shields’s statement still rings true today. Small business owners often talk about the inability to compete with big box stores whose prices generally undercut those of a local retailer’s. This may be why Hight, who opened her shop in 2015, set out to offer “extraordinary wines at everyday prices.”

Today’s Foundation Friday is a great reminder to shop locally. Not only do these businesses offer valuable goods and services, but they’re also often run by residents of our community, parents of children in our school system, volunteers with our ambulance and fire services, and so much more. Their involvement in other aspects of our community shows their vested interest in seeing Cazenovia thrive. What small business are you supporting this weekend?

Welcome to Foundation Fridays, a series where we focus on one specific historic building in the village of Cazenovia, and share a little about its rich history! After all, without a strong foundation, no structure could withstand the test of time as these buildings have.

We couldn’t start this series without first paying homage to the Lincklaen House. Built in 1835, this inn has seen a variety of well known people, including President Grover Cleveland and John D Rockefeller. Its recognizable white signpost in front served as a hitching post for the stage coach teams that made regularly scheduled stops through Cazenovia.

In 1916, the building suffered a disastrous fire, but Henry Burden used finely carved woodwork and molding still visible today among the ceiling and painted wood panels.

The Lincklaen House is still in operation today! Go check them out for dinner and drinks, and revel in the history of this 188 years-old structure.

Great presentation by Kurt Riegel yesterday about tombstone preservation, and lucky us — we got to partake in the rising of a fallen tombstone at the abandoned Farnham cemetery. Good work, Kurt!

🪦Tomorrow, beginning at 11:00 AM, we will help a tombstone not quite as lucky as the one still standing in this picture. Kurt Riegel, professional Tombstone Preservationist, will raise the flattened stone of one of Cazenovia’s early settlers, Jonathan Farnham. The program will take place at the abandoned Farnham Cemetery off Grassy Lane Road.

📍Take Rte 20 West an eighth of a mile to Grassy Lane Road on the right and proceed all the way to the very end. Park and gather at the end of the road – no parking along the side of Grassy Lane – where you’ll receive a brief overview and where the house owner has graciously agreed to your parking.

🪑🌦️Bring a chair if you wish to be seated and wear appropriate clothing and shoes. This event is rain or shine (and it looks like we’re in luck!)

Wow! We had a great turnout of about 52 people at our celebration of Cazenovia’s 230 year birthday at the Cazenovia Club last Saturday. Our thanks to Mike MacHugh for reading a proclamation from the NYS Assembly honoring the day, and to Anne Ferguson, Bill Zupan (Town Supervisor), and Kathy Hahn (Village Trustee) for giving remarks.

✨SUNDAY, MAY 21✨ Mark those calendars! We have a walking tour on the architecture of the buildings in the business district on Albany Street. This event will be held at 2pm and is rain ☔️ or shine ☀️
