Another story from the front porch. 💙

Suzette Bates

Suzette moved to Cave City in 1972 from Poughkeepsie and quickly became part of something bigger than herself.

When she arrived, there wasn’t a girls' basketball team, so she helped start one, coaching peewee girls alongside Glenda Goins Vanwinkle.

What began as an idea turned into something unforgettable. That team made it to a tournament, scored two points… and won against Southside.

But some of Suzette’s favorite memories happened outside of the gym, family reunions at the cave, with relatives traveling in from Indiana and Oklahoma, and making memories that stick.

Cave City will always be a place that brings people together. 💙

A special thank you to Suzette for sharing her story with us, and to the Cave City Senior Citizens Luncheon for welcoming us in and helping us connect with the heart and history of our community.

Civic pride grows in the places we care for together. 🌿

Studies in community development and placemaking show that when public spaces feel welcoming, safe, and thoughtfully designed, people are more likely to:
• Spend time downtown
• Support local businesses
• Connect with neighbors
• Feel a sense of belonging

Even small touches—flowers, lighting, seating, and walkable spaces—can make a meaningful difference in how a place is experienced and enjoyed.

When beauty is planted, pride has a place to grow. And we’re grateful to be growing it together.

We’re starting something new—pull up a chair. 💙

Introducing our Front Porch Series, where we sit down, slow down, and share the stories that shaped Cave City—told by the people who lived them.

We’ll be sharing one story each month, and we’re honored to begin here.

Dale Wooldridge (79 years old)

Dale’s experience of Cave City was shaped by family, hard work, and a deep sense of faith.

He grew up as one of six, working side by side in the fields. They didn’t have much—but they didn’t feel like they were missing anything. Neighbors helped each other, seasons came and went, and as Dale puts it, “The good Lord blessed us every year.”

His memories paint a picture of a different time in Cave City when the rhythm of life followed the crops.

Each spring, they’d buy fertilizer and supplies on credit from local establishments like Campbell’s Mercantile.

Then came harvest. Cucumbers first. Watermelons next. Cotton last. One year, they borrowed $699 from the bank—and paid it back with their cotton crop.

They farmed 100 acres north of town with a team of horses—no tractor.

Trips to the cotton gin were something to look forward to. A 500-pound bale might bring around $200. And the watermelon shed in town was a hub of activity, divided into sections for growers, with truckers coming in from the north to haul Cave City melons across the country.

And then there were the small moments—like stopping by Jeff Laman’s store for a 25-cent bologna sandwich.

Simple things. Lasting memories.

When the tornado hit, Dale said he stayed inside for days. He didn’t want to see it.

But in time, something else became clear:

“We built back better.”

Cave City will always be a place of faith, hard work, and resilience. 💙

We’d like to thank Dale for sharing his story with us, and the Cave City Senior Citizens Luncheon for welcoming us in and giving us the opportunity to learn more about our heritage and history.

Cruising through Cave City after school or on a summer Friday and Main Street looks full? 🚗

We’ve got you covered.

Just a quick reminder that there’s additional parking just off Main Street—behind City Hall and behind the Pocket Park.

We’ll be adding signage soon to help guide you, but in the meantime, don’t hesitate to take advantage of those spots and enjoy a short walk through downtown.

A full street is a good problem to have.

This photo is a rendering which shows the signs we have ordered and on the way!

It’s been so much fun sharing pieces of Founders Day with you this past week… and we saved this one for last. 🎨

We’re so excited to share a closer look at the art that came to life at Founders Day, from hands-on creativity in the moment to a powerful piece that will live on in our community.

First, you’ll see photos from our interactive art station, where kiddos were invited to jump in, create, and be part of something bigger.

This hands-on experience, made possible through the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Rural Arts Integration Program, was inspired by artist Alma Thomas and her vibrant circle paintings. Young artists created their own abstract circle artwork using cardboard rounds and paint sticks, thinking about color, pattern, and what their “dream garden” might look like from a bird’s-eye view.

They were encouraged to move freely, explore different colors and shapes, and not worry about perfection, just create. This interactive art station was much enjoyed!

Each piece became its own little expression of joy, imagination, and perspective… and together, they reflected something really special about the energy of the day.

Next, we’re proud to introduce a piece that carries even deeper roots:

“Everything Cave City 2026”
Epoxy resin over wood panel (diptych)

This collaborative work was created by our middle school and high school students in partnership with the Thriving Cities Lab - IASC during a two-day workshop this April.

Students began their experience with a visit to the cave, taking photos, observing nature, and gathering inspiration from a place that holds so much history and identity for our town. From there, they explored different artistic mediums and reflected on personal and collective declarations, something you’ll see woven throughout the piece.

On day two, they chose a powerful image: a group of students standing in silhouette at the mouth of the cave. They transferred that image into pencil, creating the foundation for the work.

From there, each student filled in a portion of the mosaic in their own style and medium, resulting in a piece that is layered, expressive, and uniquely collaborative.

The final work is a diptych:
• The left panel was created by middle school students
• The right panel was created by high school students

This piece was unveiled at Founders Day as part of its purpose — to give students the opportunity to create something meaningful for their community and to have a place to share it.

And now, it will live on.

We’re proud to share that “Everything Cave City 2026” will be permanently displayed in City Hall for all to enjoy — a lasting reflection of creativity, place, and the next generation of Cave City.

This is exactly what we hoped for when we said we wanted to create more space for art and culture in our community.

We’ve enjoyed recapping Founders Day over the past few weeks—thank you for viewing, engaging, and celebrating right alongside us.

Starting our first year as a Main Street Arkansas community strong. As part of our Heart of Cave City planning work, we collected 250+ pieces of community input from residents across 2024–2025. We want to thank you all again for taking the time to fill out surveys, post-its, and for sharing with us last year!

Here are the top priorities you told us you want most for Main Street Cave City:
✨ More events + entertainment
🌿 A more beautiful, welcoming downtown
🍴 Markets + local commerce
🚶 Walkability + accessibility
🎨 Public art + youth spaces

This feedback is shaping our next steps and directly supports projects like the Pocket Park Improvement Project, designed to create more reasons to gather, celebrate, and belong right here at home.
