Hats are here!!

Row, stroll, run errands, toast, and read in style. You even get to choose if you support Castine Rowing in white or navy!

They’ll be at the dock for tomorrow’s 8:30 row; first come (pay), first serve.

Don't get any ideas, Castinettes...

Next time you complain about your tracks running a little sticky, remember that rowers used to grease their pants with lard just to get a leg drive.

Before the mechanical sliding seat was invented in the 1870s, athletes were bolted down to fixed wooden benches called thwarts. But rowers knew that relying entirely on upper body and back mechanics was limiting their speed. The industrial workaround? Professional scullers would coat the seats of their leather trousers in animal fat and physically slide their butts back and forth across the wood to unlock extra power.

The friction, the heat, and the absolute destruction to their skin must have been unreal. It completely redefines the phrase "putting your ass into it." That’s boathouse wisdom.

Would you grease up some leather gear if it promised to drop 5 seconds off your split? 👇

We stared with twin fenders; two bulbous mis-shapen blueberries that protect The Baron from the dock and the dock from The Baron.

I’m sad to report that one has jumped ship. We miss it and hope it’s satisfied its wanderlust.

If you see the bulbous blue beauty, please D(irect) M(essage) this account.

Thank you!! 🫐 👀 🙏

Want to get ahead of the paperwork for your summer of rowing (and/or coxing)?

The 2026 Waiver and Registration form are now live on our website. You can read at your leisure, print, sign, and bring with you. No worries if you want to do it when you arrive; just show up a few minutes early, and your coxswain will give you hard copies to complete on the spot.

Are you wondering if you need to do this if you did one last summer? Understandable. Yes, you do. Thanks for your cooperation!
