Heron's Formula by Troy Huckaby

"The ""Heron's Formula"" has been used for almost 2000 years to find the area of a triangle. This colorful heron is covered in triangles of trash. It is standing on a triangle of trash, which represents the amount of compressed trash that the average person will produce this summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day - a whopping 490 pounds. For Herons' sake, please dispose of your trash responsibly!

Math used to calculate the trash triangle:
The average person in the U.S. produces close to 5 pounds of trash daily.
A ream of paper weighs 5 pounds.
There are 216 cubic inches in a ream of paper.
There are 98 days from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
98 days x 216 cubic inches = 21,168 cubic inches of compressed trash
A triangle has three sides measuring: a=39"", b=33"", c=27""
Heron's Formula: vs(s-a)(s-b)(s-c) where s is half the perimeter, or (a+b+c)/2
The area of the triangle is 439.27 square inches = 48.19.
The triangle needs to be 48.19"" tall."

The Rare and Great Flowered Heron by Staci and Warren Sedlacek

"Warren and I (Staci) have been collaborating artistically and otherwise for 29 years. Warren is a woodworker and all-around handy guy. I am a painter and a wood burner. We are both creative in other areas. We put a lot of thought, care, and our collective artistry into all of our projects. We hope you enjoy it!"

Visitor from SteamPunk City by Steve Herzog and Jacklyn Sauter (father and daughter)

"Small-town residents were surprised by the arrival of a rather industrial-looking visitor to Main Street. His incongruent appearance here, in our glorious natural surroundings, highlights what we love about life in Cascade, Idaho. Mayor Judith welcomed him to our laid-back city but told him, "Lose the funky goggles, bro!"

Gone Fishin' by Grier Luce

This heron, crafted with love and respect for the land that inspired it, invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and consider the enduring connection between art, nature, and place. The majesty of the heron serves as a reminder of the balance between humanity and the environment, the need for preservation, and the beauty that surrounds us every day.

Dancing Water by Team Umpqua

"At Umpqua Bank, we are guided by values that reflect the strength, elegance, and resilience of the Heron Bird, which serves as a symbol of grace and steadiness. Much like the Heron, we believe in the power of patience, introspection, and wisdom, which are key to building lasting relationships with our customers and communities.
The Heron embodies transformation and good fortune—qualities that resonate with our commitment to personal and collective growth. As we take ownership of our goals, we do so with the steady focus and tenacity that the Heron exemplifies, always striving for prosperity, stability, and the calm presence necessary to weather any storm.

Through teamwork and empathy, we reflect the Heron’s noble pursuit of autonomy and self-possession, yet we remain committed to collaboration, knowing that true success comes from serving others with heart. We honor the Heron’s resilience, embracing its ability to adapt and thrive through life's cycles of renewal and introspection.

Just as the Heron observes with keen-mindedness and rises above, Umpqua Bank aspires to provide a place of stability, trust, and growth—where our relationships form the foundation of a prosperous, peaceful future."

Pterodactyl Mountain by Rodney Huckaby

"I built a house on Osprey Ridge Road in Cascade, Idaho. The first time I visited the site, I heard all of the sounds they used for the dinosaurs in the movie Jurassic Park. I was amazed to see a rookery of herons with five nests. Ever since then, I have fondly called the place Pterodactyl Mountain."
