Out of Many - One _ Troy Huckaby

"On the Great Seal of the United States, the eagle carries a banner bearing the Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum—“Out of many, one”—representing the unification of thirteen colonies into a single nation.

Troy Huckaby expands upon this idea, shifting the focus from the formation of a government to the deeper truth of its people. Long before and long after 1776, this land has been shaped by diverse cultures—nations, tribes, and individuals whose histories span centuries and continents. Through flags, symbols, patterns, and textures, he creates a piece that reflects the many places of origin contributing to a shared human story.

• The eagle stands upon a natural wood base engraved with the names of those places of origin.
• In its talons, the eagle holds two opposing forces. The olive branch, aligned with the direction of its gaze, represents peace. The broken arrows, turned away, symbolize conflict, struggle, and violence. Together, they reflect an enduring truth: peace is not passive—it is chosen.
• The tail feathers are composed of flags from the original thirteen colonies. Just as an eagle’s tail guides it in flight, these colonies helped steer the founding of the United States.
• The body is formed from a mosaic of flags and cultural symbols. These fragments—varied in scale and color—reflect the chaotic nature of history. Yet together, they create a unified whole, suggesting that identity is not singular, but collective.
• The white head, rendered with geometric designs, represents the antiquity of human origin.
• From its beak, the eagle carries a tie-dyed flag bearing a universal peace symbol. This modern element reinforces the sentiment “Out of Many, One.”

"This piece reimagines the eagle not as a symbol of dominance or patriotism, but as part of the landscape itself. Its body carries the colors and movement of the West Central Mountains' rivers and forests, while the stump beneath it bears the marks of fire--charred and cracked, but beginning to regrow.

Inspired by the Four Corners Fire in 2022, this piece speaks to the idea that during difficult times, it is not power but care that endures--neighbors supporting one another, people opening their homes, and communities choosing to remain connected. Growth, here, is not just what returns to the land, but the relationships forged between the people who inhabit it."

One Nation _ Amanda Boley

"This Eagle represents the strength and unity of all those who make this nation great. It represents our heritage and our ancestry. Each color represents our ancestors and how they all came together to form this nation. The headdress represents the original settlers of this land, all Native Americans, and gives respect to their heritage and sacrifices. Remember that we are all guests of this land, a land that was here long before us and will be here long after we are gone. Let us cherish it and nurture it for generations to come. "
