Fourteen years ago The Rocky Horror Show shook our little town and made national news when the Mayor cancelled it being performed on the city stage. Thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, and a new producer Justice for Rocky, the show went on and was a raving success.
It even got a nod in playbill magazine saying “The mayor has announced that, from now on, he will make sure that only G, PG and PG-13 types of plays are approved for the city-owned stage. Presumably, he feels the citizens Carrollton need to be protected from material which they might find provocative, challenging, or unsettling. Except that they best theatre — from Oedipus Rex to Death of a Salesman to South Pacific — has always been provocative, challenging and unsettling." written by Stephen Schwartz (yes, that one, the Broadway legend who wrote Wicked!) Well, Carrollton sure showed up in support of 'free Rocky" back then and made our town a little bolder.
Those were the beginning seeds planted for our dream of Carrollton Rep. A more inclusive theater that pushes norms and challenges us to see humanity through a wider lens. We thought it would be a great throw back to do this show again in our 3rd season, seems the world could use a little dose of that Rocky Horror fun. To little surprise, there are again people trying to harm our show. This time the city has been hugely supportive of our theater and we appreciate all that they do! However censorship is still alive and well from the community. Someone has been ripping down our posters around town. Hatred towards our show that is about discovering how to love your true self? Learning to embrace authenticity? That is truly sad. Let's show small minds we won't stand for hatred in our town. Bring your friends, share on socials, and show everyone the heart of this town (& motto) is altogether original, which truly means ALL of us.
