PUBLIC ASSISTANCE REQUESTED

The National Park Service is asking the public to provide information for more than 20 individuals who may be missing or unaccounted for following a significant flash flood in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on August 29.

If you know of hikers or backpackers who were in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29, or if you had a campground reservation in the affected area, please contact the NPS Investigative Services Branch (ISB).

This includes people who may have been:
• Traveling the North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch
• Staying at Bright Angel Campground or Cottonwood Campground
• Traveling through “the Box” north of Phantom Ranch

This week, CMDR Maciain represented ECSAR at the Artesia Police Department’s Junior Police Academy, giving a presentation on our mission, the gear and equipment we use, and basic outdoor skills, including safety, packing for success, and the 10 Essentials for the Backcountry. We thank APD for the invitation to this wonderful youth program and look forward to next summer.

Today, command staff traveled to Roswell to pick up a new piece of equipment, this Honda ATV. Having an ATV on the ground allows searchers to cover more ground and will be capable of extricating certain types of casualties to higher levels of care in rough terrain and over long distances when air support is unavailable.

This purchase was made possible with a grant from the PY Foundation in Artesia, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their generosity. ECSAR is 100% volunteer, and our funding comes only from grants, donations, and the hard work and personal sacrifice of our volunteers. Eddy County Search & Rescue extends our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of RPD Officer Daniel Irvin, Midway Fire Chief Fuller, and the personnel onboard TransAero Medevac 40.

Public safety is a small world, particularly in New Mexico. We work side by side with each other regardless of the specific profession we choose, be it fire, EMS, law enforcement, EM, SAR, dispatch, or flight. We do it paid and we volunteer. We see awful things and we see wonderful things, and we have each other even in bad times. This world in Southeast New Mexico is hurting right now, and we appreciate your support as this grief is navigated.

Tonight at our monthly meeting, longtime ECSAR member Craig Heine trained members in the basics of pulleys, leverage, and knots, just a small part of his extensive ropes rescue knowledge. Ropes rescue is an important aspect of backcountry rescue and we are thankful to have members with such extensive knowledge to share.

Members of ECSAR participated in Riverblitz 2026 this morning, pulling out nearly three full pickup beds of trash as well as a big chunk of 24” pipe and an entire refrigerator. Thanks to everyone for showing up for the community and putting a dent in the never-ending trash that piles up around the county.

UPDATE: Roadways have reopened. Reminder to drive safe, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight and roadways will likely freeze again.

Main St. (US 82) is shut down at Centennial Ave. for police activity. Traffic is being rerouted down Centennial. Avoid the area and find alternate routes.

Tonight we honored our 2025 Volunteers of the Year, which are members who rise above and beyond their duties. Our two outstanding members are Karla Granillo (not pictured) and Rick Wiedenmann. Karla is a newer member that has demonstrated an excellent commitment to our team since her initial interest. Rick is a long standing member of the team, and served as the commander for a significant portion of his time with us. His unwavering commitment to this team stands above. Congratulations to you both on this well-deserved recognition.

: The Artesia Police Department and other emergency crews responded to an explosion at the HF Sinclair Navajo Refinery on Friday morning. Police announced online that the situation is under control and has been extinguished by emergency response teams
