Our Daily Hope Roatan

Our Daily Hope Roatan Our Mission: To act as humble servants of God providing for the daily needs of others in dire need. One of the stops was Roatan, Honduras.

January 2013 Rick and Janell Stengel took a cruise to the Caribbean. Little did they know that that stop would impact their lives forever. They were there for 8 hours. It was just long enough for them to fall in love with the island and the locals. God was beginning to work in them already. They couldn’t get the island out of their minds and soon booked a flight to go there again. They decided to

do a little “day mission” work while they were visiting. They connected with Valerie Nelson a Canadian expat running a clinic and school for people impacted by AIDS. Over the years, she introduced them to the not so pretty parts of the island. The people who the cruise ship people never see. The places that not even the trash collectors will not take out the trash because it’s too dangerous or the dump where homeless people live on top of and scavenge for food. Rick and Janell would bring suitcases of clothes, medicine, formula, school supplies and money to purchase food. Their church family, Trinity Lutheran Church Friedensau and others support their efforts. Yet, they felt that God was calling them to do more. After many prayers and talks, Rick and Janell along with their good friend Marla decided to start the christian nonprofit Our Daily Hope. Their mission is to give the poor hope by giving them food and clothing and sharing the love and salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We can’t thank the people who have supported us with donations and words of encouragement. Our church family has been so supportive, we feel truly blessed to be members of Trinity Lutheran (Friedensau). Without the support of family, friends and others none of this would be possible. To God be the glory!

Rick and I were able to visit Roatan this August. While we were there we were able to participate in a VBS program with Miss Dottie and Yanika. The theme was “Fruits of the Spirit “. We had a very good turnout of children and several adults stayed also and participated. We also had a clothes distribution and a special food distribution. We were also able to make some plans for some needed repairs of our place.

It’s been a while since we’ve updated our page. Lots of things have been happening since our last post. Miss Dottie and her daughter Yanika have been continuing the food distribution to several families in the area. Yanika has also been volunteering to tutor some of the children with their reading skills. Amazingly, we had a retiring teacher donate a lot of early reading material that we were able to ship to Yanika to help her. God works in amazing ways! Some repair work has been done in our space and we were able to purchase a table, chairs and some storage. We’re still in need of a couple of children’s tables and chairs. Right now the little ones sit on the floor and work from there.

Some of you have been asking if we could put out a Wish List. So I’ve put together one.
Clothes (all ages) please no winter clothes
OTC items such as Tylenol, neosporin, band aids, cough and cold medicine, soap, shampoo. That gives you an idea.
Beginner and easy reading books (English and Spanish)
School supplies
Money donation
Christian books and activities/crafts
We have a current need for a preschool table and chairs.

Miss Yanika has been working on the ABC’s and reading with the neighborhood children. So that is why we’re requesting the children size table and chairs.
Thank you for all the support!

We are continuing our food program and are giving away clothing now. If you would like to donate gently used clothing, let me, Rick or Marla know and we’ll make sure it is delivered. You can also help us continue the food program by sending a donation. It is all very much appreciated! To God be the glory!

We had our first children’s event (VBS) the weekend of Easter. It was quite a success. We invited the children from our area - Watering Place which is very close to the main city of Coxen Hole. The theme was all about Easter. We even had three parents volunteering to help.

Rick and I were able to go to Roatan the end of January. It was a quick trip but we were able to get a lot of things done. We have made plans to do some updating to the offices and purchasing some tables, chairs and storage shelves. The food program is going well. We have just started having donated clothing available to the locals. In the future we will post a "donation list" of items we need. This will include school supplies and OTC medicines. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to expand our efforts.

We went to Roatan in March. We took with us not only the $1700 from Deshler Lutheran but also private donations and donations from Trinity Lutheran (our church) and St. Marks (our sister church) with a total of $4000. We were truly blessed. All of the money was spent on food. We also took along 200 lbs of clothes, school supplies, OTC medicine and supplies. We had so many donations, we had to mail the overflow, which was 5 boxes!

A huge thank you to Deshler Lutheran Elementary for supporting our journey of sharing God's love to those who need it most. They raised over $1700 from their first semester chapel offerings for us to take on our trip to Roatan in March.
