Aroostook Emergency Communication Team - ARES

Aroostook Emergency Communication Team - ARES Emergency Radio Team activated by the Aroostook EMA

We are a group of volunteer Ham radio operators who are trained and ready to be activated by the Aroostook County EMA in a time of need for Radio Communications, or to assist the National Weather Service gather information during large scale storms. We are on stand by all the time for an emergency where normal means of communication are down, or are inadequate. By utilizing amateur (Ham) radio, we

will assist any community in Aroostook county to provide communications in a disaster situation or large scale event.

The storm hit at 2:47 AM.
Power out. Cell towers down. Roads flooded. 911 lines jammed.

And somewhere in a basement shack exactly like this one — a licensed ham radio operator put on his headphones, keyed up the ARES net, and became the most important person in his county.

No one called him. No one had to.
He was already there.

This is what the outside world never understands about ham radio operators. We don’t prepare for emergencies. We prepare through the hobby — every contact, every net check-in, every antenna build, every license upgrade.

So when it matters, there’s no scrambling. No hesitation.

Headphones on. Frequency dialed. Log open.
Ready.

While the rest of the world depends on infrastructure that fails — we built our own. Wire, coax, RF, and skill. Powered by batteries if we have to. Running all night if we need to.

That’s not a hobby.
That’s a calling.

Are you part of an ARES or RACES team?
