Sometimes the most important solutions aren’t loud or political.

They’re practical.

A door that locks.
A warm bed.
A place to sleep when winter hits Minnesota.

Minneapolis turned a warehouse into Avivo Village — giving people experiencing homelessness privacy, safety, and access to mental health and recovery support.

Dignity shouldn’t be complicated.
Sometimes it starts with a small door and a warm room.

What do you think about solutions like this?

Twenty years ago, after the release of “An Inconvenient Truth,” I invited 50 people to gather on my family farm outside Nashville, Tennessee. We came together, empowered by science and concerned about the dangers posed by the climate crisis. We believed then, as I do now, that informed and determined citizens can help drive the transformative solutions our planet urgently needs.

That gathering was the catalyst for The Climate Reality Project.

Over the past two decades, I have watched with deep gratitude as thousands of Climate Reality Leaders stepped forward to become champions for science-based solutions, inspiring others and driving climate action around the world.

Now, 20 years later, we’re returning to Nashville, Tennessee.

On May 1–2, I invite you to join me and Climate Reality as we celebrate this milestone and recommit ourselves to the necessary work ahead. And as part of this anniversary year, we’ll also gather and train leaders in Chile and Singapore to continue building momentum worldwide.

The climate crisis demands courage and commitment. Join us in Nashville and help shape the next chapter of climate leadership.

This year as we embark on our 51st season we will see a change at the market. Our market manager Ann has decided to resign as manager and pass on the torch. Ann and her husband Eric have been seasonal vendors since 1977 (but were daily vendors in 1976-the market's first season) and continue to be pillars of the market. She has held the market manager position for two different stints. For a brief time in the 1980’s and for the past 17 years; all together serving in that position alone for around 20 years, plus held a couple other board positions as well. She has seen many vendors come and go, has witnessed and been a part of much change, helped our market to grow into what it has become today, and enjoyed most every minute. While she won’t be the market manager, she WILL still be in attendance selling their native plants and will enjoy seeing everyone out and about without having to deal with the duties that come with being a manager.
She stated “… we have become successful as an outstanding market in Illinois. I feel proud to have been a part of that! We will continue to sell at the market so it will be fun to see how that feels after all these years.”
Her shoes will be some big ones to fill! Make sure to be following our page to learn who is filling the spot as well as other positions and updates.

The Farmers Market of Carbondale just had its annual meeting for vendors this past Monday night which means outdoor market season is almost here! The seasonal vendors voted on various items pertaining to this upcoming season, so stay tuned to learn about those in the next two weeks.

Opening day will be March 28th from 8am till noon. That same day will be the Food Works Winter Farmers Market last market day so PLEASE show them all some love too; their staff, vendors, musicians, etc. In Carbondale we are lucky to have a Saturday farmers market going on all year long. Even on days when the weather makes everyone question if they want to get out.

The Illinois Rewilding Act (officially Public Act 104-0062, originally House Bill 2726) is a first-of-its-kind state law that explicitly authorizes the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to use "rewilding" as an official conservation strategy. Signed into law in August 2025, it went into effect on January 1, 2026.
The act defines rewilding as a strategy to restore ecosystems to their natural, uncultivated state. Key components include:
Restoration of Land: Moving beyond defensive conservation to actively restore lands to their historical natural state.
Species Reintroduction: Authorizing the return of native species, specifically highlighting keystone species (like bison and beavers) and apex predators.
Ecological Processes: Aiming to re-establish natural processes—such as flooding or predation—based on state-specific historical baselines.
Foundation for Future Laws: While it doesn't create new regulations itself, it lays the groundwork for further legislation, such as the proposed Wetlands Protection Act, aimed at restoring state permitting authority over wetlands.
