Gamma Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Chartered March 15, 1941, Gamma Kappa Omega has been committed to serving the Carbondale, IL area. Davis and locally by Markea Haywood.

Chartered on March 15, 1941, by eleven courageous women, Gamma Kappa Omega has been committed to serving the Carbondale and Southern Illinois communities now in our 83rd year. The Chapter has continued to support the legacy and rich history of the dynamic sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® by providing service to all mankind. Our membership is comprised of dedicated women who

are connected and committed to the organization’s values and principles. The talented women of Gamma Kappa Omega Chapter possess many attributes used to promote and implement the current international program: Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood which is led Internationally by the Sorority's President, Danette Anthony Reed, regionally by Kiahna W. This administration has six initiatives. Strengthen Our Sisterhood will serve as the administration’s “Foundation Initiative” as we strengthen our bonds to support our service mission. The remaining five initiatives will serve as the “Program Initiatives” which include:

Build Our Economic Wealth
Enhance Our Environment
Advocate for Social Justice

Thank you all for your support! We are grateful for 85 years of service to southern Illinois! We hold our Charter Members in the highest regard for the vision to start a chapter in Carbondale. We are proud to continue their legacy of leadership, service, scholarship and commitment to this Sisterhood. Congratulations to our honorees for their well deserved recognition!

"My Project
One thing I love about the district I work for is its diversity. Students come from all types of different backgrounds which helps to create a rich learning environment. The learning environment is made up of what I bring as the teacher, what the students bring, and a well thought out physical space.

This project would help maximize the space within our classroom in order to create independent student learning centers.
Our current tables take up a lot of space and do not leave a lot of room for students to be able to navigate their environment with ease. Smaller tables will allow for easier access to learning spaces and allow me to create more opportunities for students to grow by making educational centers throughout the class to support learning objectives."
