PUBLIC RECORDS ARE PUBLIC.
A public record is generally a document, email, text message, photograph, recording, report, or other material made or received by a government agency in connection with official business. Unless an exemption applies, those records can be requested, inspected, and shared by any member of the public.

And yes, public records can be used politically.

They can be used by candidates, campaigns, political organizations, watchdog groups, journalists, or everyday citizens to examine someone’s record, challenge statements, raise questions, or provide information to voters. The fact that a public record is being used during an election or for a political purpose does not, by itself, make the underlying record any less public.

Once you create or submit information that becomes part of a public record, you should understand that someone may eventually obtain it, publish it, discuss it, or use it to make a political argument.

If you don’t want your information out there, don’t create or put that information into a public record.

Public records laws exist for a reason: government transparency and accountability.

We had another great event at Palmetto-Pine Country Club last night! As our organization continues to grow, we know we will never make everyone happy, nor are we trying to. What we are trying to do is listen, learn, try new things, and continue improving the events we put on for our community.

One of the challenges during an election cycle is that many different organizations host candidate forums, debates, and meet-and-greets. By the time candidates have attended several of them, many of the same questions have been asked and answered multiple times.

Many of you specifically asked us to stop asking the same questions candidates have already answered at every other event. So last night, we tried something different: scenario-based questions. Some people loved them. Some people hated them. And that's okay.

Our goal was to put candidates on the spot with situations they likely had not been asked about before and challenge their critical thinking under a time limit. Instead of giving them another opportunity to repeat an answer they may have already given five times, we wanted to see how they would think through a situation in real time.

Did we accomplish that? That's for each person who attended or watched to decide. We tried something new based on feedback we received from the community. Whether you think it succeeded or failed, we want to hear why.

Looking ahead to the 2028 election cycle, we're even considering a completely different approach: we prepare no questions at all. Instead, questions would come directly from the audience, be reviewed beforehand for relevance and fairness, and the community would ultimately determine what gets asked.

What did you think about last night's format? Did you like the scenario questions? Would you rather see traditional questions? Should the audience provide all the questions? Or should we use a combination?

As we grow, we want your feedback. These events are for the community, so tell us what you want to see in 2028.
